Well this morning I had the Pc on fine downloading lost planet from steam, left it on to watch the man u game.. Came down and Pc was off, my mum had attempted to go on it.. Knocked it with her knee and it made a whirring grinding noise so she turned it off, I turned it back on and said grinding noise happened again. So I took the side of made sure all the fans hadn't got anything in them.. Retried.. Grinding noise again, so I unplugged everything and had a look and couldn't see anything wrong, I tidied up some of the cables and put the side on, replugged everything in, pressed power button.. Nothing. No fans starting no noise nothing. Opened the case and the green light on the motherboard is still on which I take it means there is power going to it.. :s took out the components bar the CPU and tried again.. Still nothing. :-/ sp it seems it's basically gone dead. Any ideas?

I'd try and source another psu fella. The grinding noise does suggest something sinister. I too would have thought it was a cable getting snagged against a spinning fan but now the system won't post it must be more serious.

Have you double checked the connections? All the power cables fed to the mobo 8 pin aux as well as the 24 pin main connector

I don't have another psu :/ I thought with the green light showing it wouldn't be the psu, the CMOS battery reset didn't do anything either..

Make/model psu I don't know of, I bought it as a quick replacement, ino its an 800w model

Output voltages. Min. /. Max

5v. 0.5. 30
3.3v. 0.5. 30
+12v1. 1. 20
+12v2. --

-12v. 0. 0.8

When it comes to troubleshooting assumptions are the mother of all F ups ;)

By source I meant beg borrow or steal another lol

Have you double checked the connections? I'm unclear as to what u mean by disconnecting everything :/ Is the power switch on the correct pins? Even the wrong polarity can cause issues with some mobos.

I'm hoping the grinding was a cable snag and you have just made a slight error when reconnecting the cables

i unplugged everything and replugged it in and got no power on or anything. il try againtaking all the wires out and plugging them in if not il have to order a new psu. anyone recommend one for less than £80? .. preferably modular but aslong as its actually a decent brand this time lol

I have a OCZ silent modular 700W which I'm more than happy with for £75 odd. That's more than enough to run a gtx 460 if thats the rig in your sig thats fubar

Right, New psu just arrived, put it straight in the machine, plugged everything in. and pressed power button. Nothing. *sadface* again, green light on motherboard still lights up though :s. so im stumped, i dont have an effin clue what to do. never RMA'd anything before :(

Have you tried putting power into different socket, and did you remember to flick the switch on the back of the PSU?

Sorry, but it's a common mistake which people forget about.

yes ive tried every socket in my house :( and yes i know. 0 = off 1 = on .. im not that bad :P

Try running the system with only one stick of RAM, no HDDs or CD Drives.

Also, try and source a different graphics card just to test (do you have any other computers with one in the house (even if it's old)

its plugged in without any hdds/cd drives/gfx. im going to have one more try, take everything out, reseat everything, make sure i havent plugged something in wrong. and then kick hell out of the thing if it still doesnt work -_-

Right I would do a bench test. Power supply off cables out.

Take the mobo out of the case and rest on an antistatic surface or the mobo cardboard box or something similar. Remove the PSU from the case also and place near the mobo so cables will reach.

Have one stick of RAM in the mobo and seat the gfx card in its slot. Connect the psu cables main pins and aux. If you can move the case close enough that the power on switch cables will reach to the header. If this is not possible you can use a flat head screwdriver to short the pins to simulate the switch (just touch the screwdriver ONLY over the + & - PWR Switch pins).

You don't need to connect the monitor as the system should power up anyway without it. You can't discount the power switch also being bad so the screwdriver method actually removes this from the equation to.

Yes I know you are thinking "WHAT!!! Billy ball ache" but it's a sure fire way to test the system. If you still get no joy we are possibly talking new mobo or even cpu. Essentially you are writing most of the PC off.

Try that and post back. Any questions if i've made anything unclear just ask fella. Good luck

cheers honosuseri, no ball ache just good advice. i took everything out placed on box etc .. power switch in, pressed, nothing. tried to short the 2 pins to start it.. nothing. so fair to say that the motherboard seems to of died. which is a let down as its only 2 weeks old. its all from overclockers so how would i go about rma'ing it? as i assume it all comes under warranty :/

I'm ashamed to say I've never purchased from them lol Although I do qualify for free delivery so I shall remedy that next time i need some parts lol

I would assume you use the contact us link in the top right of the webpage. Explain the issue and request an RMA code to return the item.

You could try reseating the cpu, clean and reapply some TIM. I would suggest you conveniently forget that your mum knocked the case when you state whats wrong with it ;)

That grinding noise is what's bothering me. That sounds mechanical is most strange

ino, i never thought this would happen. i figure it sounds like one of the plastic bits is stuck in a fan.. but it just kept grinding then has stopped working altogether.. having to use a laptop :// i reseated and reapplied the tim when i reconnected everything earlier, ive sent them a message via the order/rma thing on the forum, they replied via that last time i had a problem so hopefully its replied by tomorrow seeing as they finish in the shop at 5:30.
