PC failure to find boot - Message to select boot drive or insert USB

Came back to PC earlier and was on a screen (just black with white words, almost like a POST screen) saying to either select the boot media or insert a USB to continue and to restart. Rebooted my PC a few times and still having the error. I've managed to get it somewhat fixed and to boot into windows by going into the BIOS and selecting the boot drive (which is also set as the boot drive in the bios) and it successfully loads into Windows.

This only lasts until I reboot the PC where it asks for boot media or a USB, where I then have to restart and manually click the drive to boot again. Anyone seen this before and got a potential fix or is it looking like i'll have to do a complete windows reinstall?

bios battery....maybe?

It happens on my old pc when doing a reboots, i have to go into the bios and out again and it will boot fine, dont have to change anything, asus motherboard 8 years old. (missus is now the proud owner of it

)

Would check the smart just to make sure the drive is alight.
