Spec of computer:

AMD 3200 (2.0GHz)
Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI
4x512Mb PC3200
512Mb 8400 GT PCI-e
320Gb 7200rpm SATA
DVDRW SATA
500w PSU
etc..etc...

Receive a PowerColor HD 5670 today as a boost to graphics performance, already have a main PC (Mac Mini) but put the above system together from two old computers, now since I received said card I was unsure how to proceed.

I intended to keep both GFX using the 8400 for physx use. Proceeded to remove 8400, enabled the sli mode card as I thought this was needed. Fitted both cards, turned on and nothing.

Removed cards again, set the SLI back to normal and only fittled the new GFX, switched on and nothing.

Revert back to original GFX, switch on and nothing.

This is using VGA as display connection on both cards.

Now when I say nothing I mean no display, HDD activity light flashes for only 2-3 seconds and nothing like the BIOS is waiting for input.

I dont believe there is a BIOS reset button on the motherboard so I disconnected the power and removed the batter for 5 minutes. Having done so did nothing.....

Any suggestions?

i assume by "sli card", you mean the board has a physical switch to enable SLI?

This wont work. this would only work with two identical nvidia cards that support SLI (im pretty sure the 8400 doesnt). mixing nvidia and ATI wont result in SLI. Clearly something seems to have gone pop, but i dont think it would be that.

did you ground yourself? could a static discharge have done somehthing? again pretty unlikely, but at least its a suggestion.

yeah, i can see why it wouldnt work with that enabled, but again i cant see that doing the damage. Is there anything in the manual about this? ie a warning or something?

have you tried unplugging everything bar cpu and one stick of ram? does it beep?

I will try the cpu/memory stick test, but as of this moment no beeps at all.
What about the new GFX being 2.1v PCi?

This mobo was on the first SLi / PCI-e boards (iirc). Does the 2.1 spec meaning anything?

But if so it doesnt really explain why the old one is not working, unless the motherboard has packed in! :(

Cheers

i would say you have yourself a Dead MB or CPU, in 10 years i have only had 3 CPU's fail, and all 3 events demonstrated the same issue as you descibred. 1x SKT A. 1x SKT 754, 1x SKT939 and an C2D,
Oh, that makes it 4.

Well just done the cpu/memory test and the motherboard did one long and 2 short beeps which according to the manual is CMOS Setting Error ?

Yea tried a few times it just wont accept the new card and finally got it back to normal with the old card...

Stupid old system! :p

Thanks for the advice guys

pcie 1.0/2,1 wise, they should be backwards compatable. however, it seems to be a case of your board simply does not seem to like that new card :S
