Pc files to Ipad via Wireless?

Ok first let me say I've never used anything apple, but the gf has an ipad. Ideally what I am looking for is if there is a way she can use the ipad to browse the wireless network / windows shared files then chose what files she wants and download then to the pad.
Is this possible? Ideally I dont want to go through the whole plug in and use itunes kind of thing as I head horror stories about losing everything if you dont know how to use it!
Any help appreciated!

If its media file , I use File Explorer

Sweet will give it a try. We tried plex as it sees everything fine but the sync option needs premium

If you only want to stream media files then plex is brilliant
If your wanting to sync music, photos, movies then iTunes has Wi-Fi sync which will do all that if you turn it on
Obviously iTunes has to know what you want to sync but it is fairly easy to set up
