PC for 3D artist

What do you mean by this? Are you paying someone to assemble it for you

Second, what do you mean by 3D work? Some analogue of photoshop which I haven't heard of, or something in autocad/pro engineer?

My computer is purpose built for 3D work. As such the specification might be helpful for you, might be possible to get it within budget.

i7 920 @ 4ghz
6gb corsair ram @ 1600mhz c8
gigabyte ud5
evga 8800gt flashed to fx3700 to make quadro drivers play nice
pc p&c psu
samsung f1 750gb
akasa omega
water

It rips through everything except for chains interacting with sprockets, which is apparently more calculations than it's prepared to deal with.

Yes I'm getting one store to assemble it for me, coz na matter how easy it may be I dont wanna waste so much money trying to do it myself... I've never done it!

I'm a studying 3D computer animation, so I need a PC to animate and render stuff out of Maya. My laptop at the moment can handle modelling and a little bit of animation provideing that the model is not too high poly, but when it gets to rendering or compositing, it's too slow... So I've decided to give it a little help...=)

Using a benchmark in maya, the difference between a stock speed 8800gt and an overclocked one using quadro drivers (for my 3ghz quad) was close to 300%. Frame rates at 1600x1200 went from 13 to 42. It was the biggest improvement any of the tests saw, apparently quadro drivers are well set up for maya.

However based on your last post, acquiring and crossflashing an 8800gt may be beyond you. Shame. This means your cpu has to deal with everything, rather than offloading parts of the code execution to the graphics card. So the fastest cpu you can get. I'd suggest an ocuk prebuild, as they're likely to ship it to you at 4ghz. I'll see if there's a standard one available, otherwise you'd have to phone up.

Specs are sensible.
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz Overclocked to 3.80GHz!
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB
Corsair TX 650W

This will slaughter a stock speed system.

If it was me I would try and budget for a 2 monitor setup, maya has windows all over the place having 2 monitors is nice.

Are you a student ?
If so you can get Windows 7 Pro 64 bit for £30 which saves you a fair bit.

Don;'t do this. You aren't meant to use it once you have left and you can also not use it to gain money. As you are a 3d artist you are using it for that purpose.

Hmm, should have read the fine print before suggesting it to people. :(

As Chaos said, i would probs look into a 2 monitor setup because there is much more room for working. You said you wanted to spend<£100 on a monitor, i probs wouldnt go down that route, its just sub 100 monitors don't tend to be that great (im talking about 20" and up btw) I'd probs go for two 22" monitors for around £300-£350 but thats personal preference.

Oh and if you wanted someone else to build it, buy a pre built one here because it doesnt cost anything extra (or very little anyway)
This is a good little note from one of the configuration pages
"Note - Specification not exactly what you are after? Drop our friendly Sales Team a call on 0871 910 9101, they will be more than happy to help you make your perfect system." maybe give that a try
