Hello,I'm posting this in the general forum because I think there could be so many different possible answers for this scenario.*

My in-laws are using an old PC hand me down from maybe 2000/ 2001. They aren't the most computer confident people and they use the PC for light surfing and email on Outlook Express.*The VGA card has just died. I think I could get them a new one for very little money.

The thing is, the PC is very slow. It's an old Athlon (I think). I'm pretty sure there's bugger all Ram in there as well.*

I'm thinking of giving them another hand me down PC, this one is an old Barton I built in 2003. It was pretty awesome in its time and has 1Gb RAM, I think.*

They're not looking to spend any money if they can avoid it, so I'm ruling out building them a modern system, unless you can suggest a shuttle/ micro ATX style fully integrated PC I could throw together for maybe £200 tops (I have quite a few SATA drives lying about).*

As an alternative, I was thinking of giving them the Barton with Linux installed (might be quicker than XP). They*use outlook express (I think I could move over their data onto Thunderbird or some equivalent), and they use word and excel and Skype but that's pretty much it. Skypes on Linux, so thats good. Are the Linux Office equivalents as good and able to open .docx etx?*

From my perspective,I want to do the best for them, which includes minimising calls to the Marakith Support hotline if possible :)

I'd be really grateful for your suggestions.....

If you built a quite cheap machine that could be easily upgraded to a quad core with 8GB ram

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI H61M-P23 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION** £47.99
1 x Intel Celeron G440 1.60GHz Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £29.99
1 x OcUK Imp MicroATX Tower Case (500w PSU) £26.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Single-Channel Module (CMX4GX3M1A1333C9) £19.99
Total : £136.06 (includes shipping : £9.25).

You would have to add a HDD and a ODD you said you have sata drives.

Or.

You might be able to find a cheap 775 bundle with 2gb ram and pentium 4 for around £35-45.

Wont he be better off spending about £30 more and getting the G620 cause who uses a single core in this day and age :p

what about a tablet?

The ipad2 has documents (need purchased as an app), email, safari and has a front facing camera for skype.

If your not keen on apple, try some other tablets.

In my opinion, they would the best buy due to being portable and always on. Quick for web searching.

Im sure you can buy keyboards for them but if you went with apple, they may cost an arm and a leg.

1) Probley not a big enough screen.

2) Cant view a full webpage on the screen.

3) Got to use a small or touch keyboard.

4) Quite small storage (16GB's)

5) Can't use flash player.

6) Can't print without mucking around.

7) Would have to buy all new programs etc. (Apps)

8) MORE EXPENSIVE £399 for 16GB!!

Thanks for the ideas! Utterly astonished how cheaply a micro atx system can be built!

How much better do you think that Celeron build or even the G620 would be than the Barton I could recycle? Should I stump up for Windows 7 or would keeping on with XP be OK?

Thanks!

The G620 is much much better than the Barton it will probley be 4-5x faster. You could stick with xp for now the only thing is that they are going to stop supporting it soon. But you could use it as a stop gap then you could use windows 8.

Laptop. If they don't use the PC for anything else than reading / writing emails and surfing. My mother, by far, prefers the laptop to the desktop, and it' not even a good one (some HP knock-about).

Oh well nevermind a laptop then :)

I think I'm going to just repurpose the Barton for now, but look to doing a microatx at some stage in the new year.

Thanks for the help, all!
