My folks replace their PC once every 5 years, their current PC is very slow, E6300, 2GB etc...

They will keep the 320gb sata drive as its quite new to the system and will be used as storage

Intel Core i5-3450 3.10GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail
Samsung 128GB SSD 830 Desktop Series SATA 6Gb/s KIT with Norton Ghost - (MZ-7PC128D/EU)
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ ZS Series 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black
Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1333C9D3B1K2/4G)

Trying to keep it good, but reasonable and the onboard graphics should be more than enough

Thanks

Personally i'd say an i3 and maybe forgo the SSD for this build if you need to keep the costs down.

And maybe 8GB of RAM if they're keeping it 5 years. But the choice is yours, otherwise nice build.

You could use the developers copy of windows 8 now (free and legal), then choose between windows 7 or 8 to buy once the later is released at the end of the year ;)

You do get free delivery btw so if you want the OS now you can drop the RAM to 4GB and add more later if needed.

These rigs are overclockable as they are the K series CPUs. The OEM CPU is much cheaper and basically pays for that excellent heatsink which is on offer too :)

If its just for the folks i agree with Joshct, no need for an i5 or an SSD. They wont notice the difference in speed anyway :P not if they are anything like my parents!

I respect that he wants the best for his folks within the budget. There is no ivybridge i3 yet. Ivybridge consumes less power than sandybridge for a start (factor that consumption in over 5 years), the K series CPU i spec'd is not only overclockable but includes the improved IGP. The non K i5 CPU the OP used still has the old sandybridge IGP

Agreed if it was to last 1 year, but five years... They will need the i5.

What OS is on their current PC? I have a similar spec machine and I revived it with a clean install of Windows 8 Consumer Preview (I know I know, but it's free).

Prolly upgrade ram too.
