PC for Second Life

Hi all,

First post, would like to think it will be the first of many. I used to enjoy building my own computers many years ago but I'm seriously out of the loop now and don't really know what's what any more.

I'm looking for recommendations for a PC to run Second Life. The requirements are here but I would like to exceed the recommended not just meet them. There's a small section underneath the requirements box stating some of the graphics cards that absolutely will not work too.

I don't need a hard drive or DVD, just motherboard, processor, memory and graphics card, so if anyone could recommend a bundle that would be great.

I really don't want to spend any more than £500 if possible.

looks like pretty much anything can run it even a fast XP PC.

A Gaming Spec

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £478.07
(includes shipping: £11.10)

A Just play Second Life Spec.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £392.97
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Clarification
you could go possibly even cheaper than that, buying a AMD CPU/motherboard, but both of the above could play other games reasonable or very well.

if you will JUST play second life, then you could go EVEN cheaper.

I mess with Second Life now and then. When it comes to the CPU, CPU usage is very small (just 15% on an i7-4770K), so you won't get any faster performance with an i5/i7 over an i3, and you'll still have room for multitasking.

8GB memory is more than enough for it and plenty of browsers open etc. For multiple instances of Second Life open, then 16GB could be beneficial (albeit not a requirement).

Video card is where you'll want to splash if you want high/ultra graphics enabled. The fps can vary wildly depending on objects and number of avatars in a region, and even a GTX 970 can struggle to produce 40 fps in a packed region, if high/ultra settings are enabled. But you can use just about any card, and simply dial down the general graphics setting on the fly, when things get a bit choppy. A 750Ti is perfectly capable of displaying ultra settings at a decent fps if not many avatars are in a region/specific objects in the region don't tax the video card too much.

An SSD is of benefit. Faster teleports, and with the program accessing cache for textures constantly, faster rezzing of objects. So an SSD + i3 will give you better performance than HDD + i5 in this case. Note that the program does not give you a choice where to install it. It will install on the boot/OS drive.

You haven't mentioned which case or power supply you have. That will have an impact on motherboard choice and video card choice.
