PC FPS to console FPS

I have played games on the PC for years(!), but the last couple I haven't played as much. I used to play lots of FPS becoming not too shabby at quake2/UT etc.
So I don't really have that competitive edge I used to think I had (probably as a result of getting a little older :) ), but sort of do miss gaming and so was thinking of getting a PS3. I was wondering how people have found going from PC FPS to console FPS - I know its a vast difference in the controller but did you get used to it and get to enjoy it? I know the hardcore gamers will totally say to play FPS properly you need KB/M combo, but for just enjoyment and playing the game a controller still does the job (?).
Be good to know peoples thoughts, I have a wii but I like the look of some of the PS3 games and upcoming titles!
Oh, and whilst here did anyone in this position, find themselves being re-ignited and go back to the PC a little?

cheers all!

I was exactly the same, in fact I think I also started a thread about it too.

Anyway, coming from years of PC gaming I thought I'd never be able to get used to FPS gaming on a joypad. I was mistaken! Give it a month or so and you'll be perfectly adequate with a controller, not world class you understand but more than good enough to play the game without constantly berating the controller's lack of paternal parentage. For me now, mainly because my PC won't play the latest FPS games due to being quite old, all the latest games I want to experience are going to be bought for my PS3.

I found it incredibly hard to get to grips with fps gaming on a console, I can play basic single player games fine but multiplayer does me every time, I find the 360 easier to use than the ps3 but still buy all fps games on pc,

after killzone 2 i have no concerns about what console fps's are capable of.

superb game even if the final level is a pain.

happy shooting on either now.

It helps when playing console FPS game not to get frustrated when you cant aim at the exact point you want to eg the head. In most console FPS it has a varying degree of auto aim that will help you hit. In some cases it will track the target for you in otheres it will just make good with the general area you are shooting at , COD4 being one of the most generous with the Aim assit and KZ2 being one of the least. Once you get it that you dont have to be as exact with a controller it makes console FPS games far easier and much more fun, and does not seem to detract from playing PC FPS games.

Well thank you everyone, really great replies - ill prob get my PS3 next month, really looking forward to it prob. killzone bundle to start off, im looking forward to see what its like and hopefully will keep persevering with it :) i think i would probably get frustrated as on the PC I used to get a kick out of 'snap-to' aiming (like railgun etc) - i presume in games you can disable any auto-aim feature? seems to negate the point and turn it into a walkthrough lol.

I do both a lot. It doesn't bother me and I don't know why it bothers other people.

Indeed, the transition was a little strange at first, but then of course it will be! I played shooters on PCs for the best part of a decade then suddenly switched to pad, but then any control method would feel weird after spending so long with another. By the time i had completed Uncharted i was fine with it (about 10 hours playtime)

Grew up with both consoles and PC, back in the PS1/PS2 era things were a bit wobbly on the controller, but theyve pretty much nailed the controls for pads these days. Shouldnt be a problem :).

Wait till after the Games Con in Germany on tuesday 18th August, probable price drop or bundle and possible PS3 slim reveal.

I go between the two; used to play CoD4 on my mates 360 online quite a bit, although I had the game for the PC myself. Currently playing BF1943 on the PS3 too. It is odd and first and it does feel like the controls are far too inaccurate and you end up looking all over the place, but it's just a case of practice and becoming more comfortable with it. The PS3 controller isn't exactly the best for FPS games, but you can be pretty quick and accurate with it once you're used to it, you just learn not to over-compensate.

bought my 360 six months ago, and dont think ive played a single game on the PC since, the controller took a while to get used to but now i dont even think about it.

If I'm honest, I barely play FPS's on my 360. I still mainly FPS on my PC.

I can play through the singleplayer fine, but playing online on the xbox against people is just pure frustration so I stay away from it.

The pad is great for relaxing with, but it doesn't beat the K/M for control which is pretty obvious.

I used to hate it, always prefered mouse and keyboard, still do. But now i have got used to the controller and it does take a while to get used to it, best play SP to get a decent aim but once you have it, its pretty fun and when your in the zone you dont really think about it.

I used to be a hardcore FPS'er on my PC back in the day, was right into CS from the beta up until 1.6 and I hated console FPS with a passion. Now my PC has been turned into an HTCP so isnt really suitable for gaming and I use my 360 for pretty much all my gaming now and although I can play FPS ok with the controller it still annoys me at times. It's nowhere near as accurate or responsive as kb & mouse combo and i find myself getting frustrated especially when I play online, shots that i could pull off with ease on the pc i find myself struggling with on the controller.

That being said overall i enjoy playing on the 360 i just dont think it will ever match up to a kb & mouse combo. Anyone that says differantly has either never played for any length of time with a kb & mouse (or was crap anyway) or lying.

I was worried about this but having just finished resistance 2 I can say it's fine on a controller. I found it helped to turn down the sensitivity just a touch to start off with.

I've only started playing FPS on a console since getting the PS3 2 years ago or so. I'm still pretty crap but I don't play them all that often. Have been playing BF1943 recently and have been getting progressively better. Don't know how other people are so good at it sometimes though...
