PC Freeze no BSOD

Hi,

I have built a new PC and am experiencing lockups (screen output freezes) where i am forced to restart the PC.
This issue does not produce a BSOD or any trace in the event log. It can happen after 5 hours or after 10 minutes.
The best way for me to replicate it is to play games (Skyrim) which seems to bring it on reliably. This led me to believe that it was an issue with my graphics card which I have replaced with my older one but it still occurs.

I have ensured that its not an overheating issue by removing both side panels and monitoring the heat of the system and CPU/GPU when it occurs and the temperature never gets above 50 degrees.

I am not overclocking any component on the system everything is running as default.

Here are some of the solutions i have tried;

  • Removed all non essential components
  • Stress tested the CPU with Prime 95 (15mins) without replicating the issue
  • Memory tested the RAM with the memtest86 for 5hrs with not a single error detected.
  • Re-installed the OS with a complete format of the drive.
  • Updated all of the drivers including the BIOS.
  • Swapping the RAM about removing one stick, then the other.
  • Purchased and replaced a new power supply.

Here is a breakdown of my system;

  • Power Supply - Crosair CX600M
  • CPU - Intel Skylake i5 6600K
  • Motherboard - MSI Z170A Gaming Pro
  • RAM - Crosair 2x8GB DDR4 3000MHz Vengeance LPX
  • Graphic - MSI GeForce 780 OC edition (3GB) / (tested also with MSI GeForce GT 430)
  • SSD - Samsung 840 EVO Pro 128GB - (OS)
  • SSD - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB - (Games/Media)
  • OS - Windows 7 SP1 (fully updated)

Does anyone have any suggestions I could try or what the believe is likely to be the problem.

Thanks.

latest bios?

if its locking up in games it could be memory related,tested without xmp enabled in bios?

EDIT: run memtest86 on each stick see if any errors crop up

Just a question, when running prime95 my processor gets hot very quickly 90+ and the on-board graphics drops out but i can still remote desktop in and kill the test. Is this something that would point towards a faulty processor?

Is this running at stock speeds and voltages, and what cooler are you running?

Ok well stock coolers are never advised, they are loud noisy slabs of metal that very rarely do any justice, they are simply there to perform a job at an average pace and fill out the retail package, hence why there is very little difference in price between oem and retail packages. (Hint: the packaging itself costs money, so the cooler is virtually worthless)

Anyways, first point of call, order a new cooler ASAP. You'll thank me later. Secondly, as you stated you checked temps at time of this anomaly and around 50c is fine. The fact that Prime95 is pushing your CPU up that high in temp very quickly is a worry though. Have you presumably disabled on-board graphics and re-run a stress test to evaluate?

Thankfully I have a cooler on the way.

I have carried out the Prime95 with a GPU in place and the video doesn't drop out like it does when I use just the on board graphics (GPU removed) . The CPU hits the same temperature in both scenarios though.
