I had this issue where the PC freezes for about a second and the sound that is playing gets looped for a second. That exact note gets looped for a second so causes a buzzing(ish) sound.

I thought it may have been the old XPS 630i motherboard that came with it and I recently moved to 1155.
CPU has changed, GPU is the same but the problem was there before I got my 7950's, RAM has changed, new SSD and HDDs. The only thing that isnt new is the optical drive and the PSU.

I reckon it may be the RAM as im changing that anyway but does anyone know what is actually causing the problem?

is it only in games or on desktop ect

what and how much memory are you using and using latest bios for your board?

tried enabling xmp for your memory if it supports it? and manually set bclk to 100 pwm phase control to extreme performance and vcore voltage response to fast

if running 16gb of memory try with 1.10v cpu/vtt voltage

I know for a fact it happens on the desktop but I cant remember if it happens when gaming.
Was using the latest BIOS on the old board and on this new board.
Only 4GB of RAM, it can happen literally any time. One minute ill be looking at photos on the desktop and itll happen and while 100% load, gaming and rendering, it wont happen. Vice versa.
Both times ive been running RAM that I just found in the house.
Will be getting 16GBs of Corsair Dominator Platinums soon. Do you reckon its to do with RAM?

could be memory,i think you'll only know by testing with your new memory when it arrives

enable xmp for it and it will set the speed/timings/dram voltage for you

if it still does it I would set phase control to extreme perf and vcore volt response to fast, that will help whether stock or overclocked

random freezing and sound loops are usually memory related, either poor bios compatibility or a bios setting/voltage not right

Have 16GBs of Corsair Dominator GT's set to its XMP profile.
The only thing that isnt new in this rig is the PSU and case (doubt its the case).
Im probably going to get a new PSU since it doesnt even allow me to OC my GPU.

with 16gb you might need a touch more cpu/vtt which x.m.p won't set,so you have to manually set it,try with 1.10v from stock 1.05v

stock 1.05v is ok for 8gb but 16gb usually needs a touch more for stability

If it "sticks" for a second or two but then recovers I doubt if it's memory. Bad memory tends to cause the system to crash.

It sounds more likely that windows is loosing an attached disk device and sticks while trying to rescan it. Check in the windows system event log to see if there are any error messages in there along the lines of read/write errors, or devices disappearing unexpectedly.

If this is the case, then check that the power and data leads are secure on your disks (inc optical drives). Also may want to see whether there is any later firmware for your SSDs.

edit: After reading through your initial post again it's likely to be your optical drive. Had similar issues with a Blu Ray drive I had. Easiest way to tell is to disconnect it (both data and power) and see if problem reoccurs.

So it does seem that it may be the PSU. Its due for a replacement anyway as it cant even handle a OCed 7950. Noisy as well

So you reckon even if the optical drive isnt in use, Windows can still mess up?

I had a similar issue last year. PC would lock up during gaming and loop the sound as you described. It also happened while watching youtube.

I tried memtest etc. no errors.

I'm fairly sure updating the firmware on my Crucial M4 SSD solved the problem, might be something similar with your Samsung?

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I tried the optical drive thing to no avail. My SSD is running the latest firmware update. Im sure its not the drive itself as ive run OSes off 3 different ones with the same problem.
Just know it was particularly bad. It went on and off for a few minutes straight, happening with 5 second intervals. The worse its been.

I opened up task manager and im using 4/12GB BUT, when it does happen, the CPU drops usage drops. I was rendering clips at 80% usage and as it happens it would drop to 20% briefly for a second or two.

I believe i found the cause.
It happens when two things are simultaneously using the same drive.
I just noticed it now when rendering a video to my D drive and having Steam download a game to the D drive as well.
Could this be a problem? I would assume many people write multiple things to a drive but I dont see many solutions to a problem like this?

I have a space barracuda so im going to swap the Hitachi out. I was downloading a steam game to the drive and transferring files from it and also running a MC server off it and the buzzing happened every 2 seconds.

it might be a combination of 2 things:

1) hard drive power down interval is set too low in power settings, this will give you a few seconds lag when something tries to read from the drive when its in its shut down state.
2) hard drive write cache isn't enabled, this can be disabled when drivers are replaced with none microsoft ones (such as intel rapid storage ones).

I dont think its to do with power. Ive tried 3 PSUs now. One new PSU, one from a working pc and one old one.

I never ran IRST in my last build and I still had this problem. Ill check the drivers though.
