PC freezes when restarting - Windows 10

Hi all,

I build a new pc recently based around:

Intel Core i5-12600KF
MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk WIFI DDR4

And every time I do a "restart" from within windows or within the BIOS is hangs when rebooting and the only way round this is to hold the power button down to turn it off and then turn it back on again.

The screen it hangs on displays the MSI MAG logo and has those little white dots at the bottom which spin around. This is on Windows 10.

I've attempted a repair, and messing around with the boot options to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I've done all of the above apart from a fresh install of Windows, I really don't want to that unless I really have to. But I guess it's inevitable...

You've changed platform. And no matter how many 'knowledgeable' people will tell you that Windows these days is good at 'sorting itself out', best practice is to do a clean install when changing motherboards, I agree with @mickyflinn .

It is inevitable, but also essential. Otherwise, weird **** like this happens. It's Microsoft you're dealing with, Windows isn't THAT good at 'sorting itself out'.

Sorry I didn't explain better, I did a fresh a install when I upgraded. I will be doing a fresh install today as I've got a new hard drive.

Hi everyone, this is driving me mad now. I did a fresh install on the new drive which is a Western Digital Black SN850 1TB NVMe.

Its strange as when Windows was installed it did the first few soft reboots without issue and then it just started freezing again. It must be a software issue somewhere.

I figured it out, I had installed something called "User Scenarios" within the MSI Centre Software which basically allows you to change the fans speeds. There's a setting in there called "software control" and the option to turn this on for CPU and FAN. For some weird reason turning this on causes the system to crash when doing a restart in Windows.

utter garbage programs and well done for figuring that out as could have led down the hardware failure stage.

MSI Centre (used to be called Dragon Centre) is terrible. Just uninstall it and use the BIOS to set a fan profile.
