For the past couple of weeks my pc has started to freeze up. it all started when getting a new sapphire r9 280x. originally i got an asus r9 280x and didnt have the problems apart from it artifacting so hence why i now have a sapphire 280x. sometimes after i reboot from it freezing up my hdd disappears and takes a few resets to get it back up again. changed the sata cable but still have the disappearing trick it does.

i did download hdtune to see if there are errors and it does say "end to end error detection" has failed and also "interface crc error count" needs attention.

full spec:

cpu - amd phenom 2 960t @ 4.0
gpu - saphire r9 280x
motherboard - msi 870a-g54
ram - 8gb corsair 1600 running @ 1333
hdd - 1tb seagate baracuda
psu - ocz 650 watt
5 case fans and dvd burner

i only got the hdd last year but could it be on its way out allready?

could the saphire 280x gpu be causing the freezes, or lack of power maybe?

Well that could be a lot of things.

Motherboard sata connections (have you tried another port?)
Disk controller (eek new board potentially)
Hard drive is physically on its way out. I'd backup anything important just in case! Do you have that capability to test the drive in another pc?
Sata cable maybe?
Dodgy sata power connector cable or the power port on the psu end if it's a modular psu.

Good luck but a few things for you to investigate by change some things are (cables etc)

Edit: I retread your post and see you've tried an alternative cable so scratch that bit from the above!

power supply is a OCZ OCZ-ZS650W-UK ZS Series 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply. ive had it for about 2 years i think not 100% sure exactly how old it is.

ive found out its actually a seagate hdd aswell lol. cpu and motherboard again not 100% sure on there age but think its about 3 years old and the ram is less than 2 years old.

ive tried different sata cables and ports but get the same thing happening. i am going to put in my old gpu today just to see if its that that is causing the problem.

Have you tried running it at stock to see if the OC is an issue?

Is the memory overclocked? Run memtest.

Is the bios up to date? have you tried a bios reset?

i did think it could have been the overclock so thats the first thing i tried but it was still unstable. origionally i did have 6 cores unlocked running at 3.8 wich has been fine for a good while its just ever since i got the gpu that things seem unstable so i reset the bios and am now locked to 4 cores at 4.0.

im pretty sure the bios is upto date aswell. another thing i have noticed since putting the 280x in is the dvd drive buzzes a couple of times when i turn my pc on wich i hadnt noticed before. it did the same when i just put in my old gpu so not sure if its because i hadnt noticed the buzz on boot before :S

seems to be fine for a couple of days then start to get freezes when i try install a game or playing a game etc

the memory is actually running below stock at 1333. every time i try run it at 1600 it reboots so ive just left it at 1333. got a feeling my motherboard could be the issue here
