HI

Wondering if anyone has encounted this problem, my pc randomly freezes but i can still move the mouse cursor but unable to click on most things. Sometimes vent will still be ok sometimes it lagg until the freeze goes.
If i ctrl alt delete it comes up with preparing security options, and after a period comes back to normal with the task manager opening up, other times just stays frozen.
I have checked my HDD as it was a possible cause using google adn i did find a dodgy drive but thats been changed. i have also used the cmd thingy to checks windows or registry not sure which but that was ok.

Really stuck now never seen anything like this and cannot play onlione games because of it.

Also my nortons cannot find anything.

thanks for help

Could something be overheating?

The very first thing I'd do is take anything 'Norton' off the PC. I haven't looked at Norton stuff for a good few years now but they have never had a particularly good reputation.

Umm i thought that but when i had overheating before its totally crashed and not recovered, Like this mostly does. I was thinking if a gpu or ram could be the issue dunno really

Oh i only got norton after the problems started and did find a couple of things. Incidently its startes happening since a reformat. Could te windows installation cause this?

It could be, might be worth a shot, might be corrupted in some way.

I'd probably check the RAM to make sure that's ok (MemTest) before reinstalling windows, if you decide to go ahead with that.

If it still happens it's a case of swapping all the components out and trying to find what the culprit is, if it's hardware related.

Is the power supply strong enough for the system ?

Power supply should be ok i bought it from here 18 months ago and i think these guya know what there doing. Will trh mem test tonight if thats ok will try a reinstall again :(. Thanks for help

If the specs in your sig are accurate, have you got the latest drivers for your 580 sli? If you haven't, get over to the Nvidia website and find the latest. Remove the older drivers from within 'Programs' in Windows Control Panel, then run something like driver sweeper, which will remove any Nvidia files that are left behind. Then install the latest driver package.

You could also perhaps try removing one of the 580s too.

You said it only started since a reinstall, so that makes me think an old driver could be to blame. Worth a try.

Also, what do you mean when you say 'if i ctrl alt del it comes up with preparing security options'? Is that something to do with Norton?

I installed the latest drivers from nvidia when i reinstalled. And wen i click ctrl alt delete. The screen goes blue and says preparing security options. Although i think its trying to lod the task manager and failing or something. As it did this before and after the installation of nortons. Also same system as sig.

It was worth a shot re the graphics driver.

It does sound like there is something wrong with the Windows install to be honest, but try Memtest on the RAM as shoot1st suggested also.

I used to have a similar problem with my kids pc, and discovered it always happened when coming out of sleep mode, so i adjusting the power settings and it fixed it.
Also type in the search bar "reliability" and "View reliability history" should come up, take a look at the time when you see the crashes, does it tell u anything?
Does this happen anytime? or specific times like online, gaming, watching a video etc...?
most common causes of freezing are
Corrupt driver
Ram- correct voltage and timings.
Psu

Happens anytime really and deffo not coming out of sleep as have it turned off. Always seems to be at desktop though and not in a game although sayin that i havent played as much as i dont want it to happen. I played a game of sc2 last night and it happened as soon as back to desktop. Other time it will happen just after it has booted up. Will try what you suggest when get home from work cheers.

The most likely hardware problem is ram. Run memtest for ages.

If the ram passes, it's probably one of a very long list of windows-is-broken problems. Easily fixed in the usual fashion, which tends to be "sod it, I'll reinstall".

Less likely, you can blame hard drive / power supply / graphics card.

Your system mite (I would say probably) be unstable due to the overclock. have you stress tested using Prime? and monitor temps with HW monitor to check they aren't too high?

Tbh, I'd take everything back to stock before you do anything so you can rule it out.

Also, what PSU and cooling have you got set up?

well, got home from work and tried to reinstall windows only to find when the setup page came up my mouse and keyboard never worked so could not, weird as i am sure they use to work to reinstall. Anyway i decided to remove 2 of the ram sticks to see if that helps, when it powered up it said overclock failed, so changed overclock to auto instead of manual and now seems ok, although time will tell,

If it stays ok was it the overclock or the removed ram, is there anyway to activate the overclockers overclock with only 2 of the 4 ram sticks in?

well an update,
I have tried removing ram one at a time also graphics card, to no avail, i have discovered that it only happens when using windows and not in game, i suspect thats due to my game being on another drive maybe, so its either my windows installation or my ssd c drive.
Has anyone had this when trying to reformat,
My motherboard does not have ps2, so when i insert my windows disc the usual come up saying press a key to boot from disc, at that point my keyboard is working even has the numlock light on, but whewn windows comes up to input region etc my keyboard and mouse doesnt work even the num lock key has gone out, very weird it use to work??? any ideas how i can reformat, and why its stopping working

thanks
