PC Gamer Mag

Not bought PCG or PCZ for a while now, though I noticed PCG has become very thin when I spotted it in the shops. The practice of shrink wrapping puts me off, I know it's to discourage the WHS lunchtime free library brigade but I'm more likely to buy it if I can have a quick scan and see the articles or reviews are of interest.

Last time I did buy PCG, the whole editorial style seems to have gone down the juvenile/FHM "lad's mag" approach. Big name games with glaring problems (like FC2) or DRM issues getting very generous scores while some of the smaller titles get two paragraphs and 60%.

Bought a couple of TPCG and the style seemed a bit better though still hit and miss on the objectivity. Won't be bothering now they've added a DVD and jacked the price. Anyway, they seem to put most of the reviews on their website after a couple of months.

If I want an opinion on a game, I'll either look on web review sites, forums such as this or if it's been out a while the reviews on Rainforest.

Used to subscribe to PC Zone, but it went downhill so stopped, only one I get now is CustomPC as it is more hardware based, even that is going downhill.
Not really any good mags around these days.

if you had to choose between GamesTM and Edge, which would it be?
We have and xbox360 aswell as the PC for gaming, so multi-platform is a benefit.

PC Gamer quickly became a joke of a magazine. From complaining about C&C: Generals being politically incorrect and badly timed to its Half-Life 2 review and any other big game they were told to promote with big shiney pictures and overly generous review scores. It's a shame as it was good once.

I very rarely buy any of them any more, it used to be a monthly thing with PC Gamer, mabye the PS3 magazine, or the xbox 360 one, depending what was in it.
I didnt buy Gamer for ages, then I saw they had FC2 in it............... I have not bought it since, and wont ever again.

I bought Games TM this month with, it reviews Halo wars, Killzone 2 and a some random JRPG nonsense.
Their marking criteria seems to be, If its a big game, with some hype behind it, knock 2 points of the average score given by everyone else, if its some obscure Japanese RPG that belongs on the snes circa 1993, then give it 10 out of 10, no matter how good it is.

Been like that the last 2 issues I've bought.

Subscribed to Total PC Gaming since it came out, I too liked the idea of a decent mature gaming mag without the overly inflated price under the pretence of a free cover disc, as this was one of the points they bragged about in Issue 1 was disappointed when they suddenly went down that route and were strangely quiet about it. Since my subscription price has remained the same i will stick with it as I like tha Mag even though the disc is only ever used as a coaster.

There's a survey up on their website at the moment - fill it in and tell them where to shove their cover disk and other assorted tat. I did :D

I have just over 100 back issues of PC Gamer and various discs dating from 1996 going soon, if anyone would be interested.....Don't want much for them, really. Good way to start a collection :D

Random but it's an odd thing to sell, at least here it's vaguely topical.

I used to have a subscription to PC Gamer but cancelled it. I didn't think the cost was worth it and I thought the free disk they gave out kept getting worse; they stopped putting videos on to it and replaced them with links?!

I've also got heavy boxes worth of gaming magazines, but sometimes I'd browse through them to see what was the pinnacle of gaming technology at the time. :D Ah memories.

I still subcribe to PC Format, just for somthing to read on the throne every month. They still have the odd good article/review but these days I just look upon it as some light reading. They've lost pretty much all credibility in my eyes thanks to some very questionable advice and reviews recently.

I'll certainly stick to the internet if I want some real news and/or reviews.

I'd probably buy games mags more often if they only cost £3~£4

I've read Games™ before, it was fairly decent.

I gave up on PC Gamer a fews ago now, they just seemed to take forever to update information that was already common knowledge in the PC and Gaming world. I thought why am i buying a mag that does not give you up todate information in some case they were 6 months behind.

On the basis of that I've just gone and subscribed to GamesTM online :)

I prefer GamesTM to Edge too. Edge are far too up their own backsides for their own good. GamesTM usually has an interesting selection of articles and I (mostly) respect their opinions on games.

This is where the whole net book, mobile phone thing comes in. Internet on the go.

How does that help on the tube or on a plane? :p

Used to have pcz every month but only bedtime read I enjoy I is pcformat and occasional CustomPC for tech stuff untill I get a lappy I suppose;) why don't you try a free subs to lamespy daily or try this linky

Pfft. 13 reviews on Metacritic gave Far Cry 2 over 90%. The average score was 86%, which is very respectable. It wasn't just PC Gamer that enjoyed Far Cry 2. Just because they give a review you disagreed with, doesn't mean they were wrong.
