I'd probably recommend RPG/RTS type games for a non-gaming person. FPS involves more skill, and if you're not overly interested in it, it can be really boring just dying all the time whhile trying to learn what to do.
My other half plays Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Settlers II 10th Anniversary Edition mainly. She also likes Civ IV and her next purchases will be Tomb Raider Anniversary and Dreamfall.
