Would I see much difference if I had my resolution higher during games?

I am currently playing on a 17" 1280x1040 res

And am thinking of moving to a 19" widescreen 1440x900

Is it worth it for games?

Thanks

The higher the res, the better specs you need for gaming, with that 8800GTS you should be able to manage things no problem with current games, though higher ones should be OK too...

So would it look a lot better or not really notice. What should I be going up to in res with my current config?

Thanks

My personal opinion would be to not bother changing monitors unless you can get a 22" widescreen. I think they are reasonably priced these days.

i went from a 17" 1280x1024 to a 22" 1680x1050 and i used to use a 7800GTX with it for a year and fps is fine,

And my god the difference is amazing  but now im looking for somthing.... bigger :D

1440x900 is lower than 1280x1040! What you'll get is a bigger screen without the ultra sharpness of your current display. That's the trade-off.

A 20 inch 1650*1050 might suit you better, if you have the hardware to manage that res.

You will appreciate going from 1280x1024 to a 20" 1680x1050 mainly for the benefit of widescreen. I don't think you're going to find it that much sharper (This is the transition I made you see), however I would certainly recommend it. You don't gain very much in vert, but the hor+ is nothing short of beautiful.

If you are currently running a CRT that has been in service for a few years then you may very well see a difference in clarity. Do not go for a 1440x900 display. You would quite easily play at 1680x1050.

Resolution makes a huge difference, if you ever get a chance to check out 1920x1200 with AA, you would be in awe :)

Yeah, going to a screen that size that size you'll actually reduce the "detail" at which the image is drawn.

Going from 1024 vertical to 990 pixels it's actually drawing the 4:3 image smaller if ya get my drift, but what you will see is the added benefit of widescreen and having a wider feild of view in games, the "extra bits on the left and right" (technical term :p!)

If you're really wanting a slightly noticeable boost in res quality and a more signifigant boost in screen real estate though I'd suggest stepping up to 1680x1050 (8800gts 320mb should be suffient)

1680 monitors come in two sizes; 22", but 20" can be had for a tad cheaper if budget is a concern.

Your resolution would actually be lowered slightly but your screen area increased slightly:

17" 5:4 LCD has 1310720 pixels and 141 square inches of screen space.

19" 16:10 LCD has 1296000 pixels and 162 square inches of screen space.

So apart from the advantages (and disadvantages) of going widescreen the difference will be fairly small. It would be better to go with 20"/22" in my opinion.
