hello

This is a spec for a mate of mine will be gaming mostly wow/rts style games, i was a bit worryed that the psu on the starter bundle wont be good enough so i thought i post and get feedback for him.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 OC WINDFORCE 3X 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £269.99

Corsair PC Starter Bundle 3000c - 650D Case / TX 650W V2 PSU / H60 CPU Cooler (Cooler Half Price) £258.97

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £167.99

Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £129.98

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £35.99

He wont ever be using SLI and has no plans on updating the computer again for a few years since he doesnt need all the latest stuff.

He will be adding a ssd later and has 2 stata drives so i was thinking maybe he should go for a 750psu rather then a 650 but was unsure if needed.

The idea is to try and make it as low as possible but also make sure it can last him, everything can be changed but the case because he loves it, so any views on better motherboard etc choices welcome but i think juding from the fps tests he needs at least a 570 card

I guess he might look into overclocking but i not spoken to him about it since he doesnt know a lot about overclocking and neither do i.

Do you think he will save money by waitting till after x-mas or wont really matter?

thanks
for any views
pete

The Corsair TX650W is a quality PSU and more than enough for a single GTX570 and plenty of SSDs/HDDs etc. Given that "the idea is as low as possible" I'd reconsider the Corsair starter bundle to be honest, esp as he wont be overclocking. Motherboard is a good choice and will even do SLI/crossfire so you could get the slightly cheaper Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68. Also in terms of the cooler he could even stick with the stock Intel one or get something like the Gelid Tranquillo if he wants something quieter. If your sure he is NEVER going to want to overclock you could save a right bundle and just get a basic H67 motherboard with an i5-2400.

What kind of budget are you looking at? Does he need an OS/monitor/peripherals?

he will be playing at 1920x1080since the card will run the games he wants at really good fps, and i know he wanted to stream some games.

when i spoke to him he wanted the H60 CPU Cooler because he didnt like fans for some reason, so maybe i should try and get him to change that. When it comes to overclocking, i guess its a case of he will if he needs it, IE if computer is runing a bit crappy just overlock it but i guess since he is going be streaming/playing etc he might need to overclock it

he is fine for the os/screen/peripherals he will use his current ones.#

The budget is really cheap as possible, if he could get it down its welcome, i think 500/600 without case since thats like 140 on own but knowing him he will just save if he needs to

I've read that closed-loop water coolers like Corsair Hydro and Antec Kuhler can be quite noisy? Is this something that can be solved by upgrading the stock fans though?

The rad itself doesn't make any noise...it is the crap fans that comes with the cooler that do...so the simple answer to be to get quieter fans to replace stock fans.

To be honest, I think that case for nearly £150 too expensive, and even with the half price on the H60 CPU Cooler, with it being over-priced at £62, it only drop the price down to £31- the saving is not exactly huge of you consider that the Antec Kúhler H2O 620 can be bought for around £40. Ask him to look at other cheaper alternative to see if there's any that he fancy.

For example, grabbing something like the following:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-248-CM&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=
plus a Antec Kúhler H2O 620
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-005-AN
...would save nearly £120 comparing to the Corsair bundle, and the money saved can be put toward getting a GTX580 instead of the GTX570. So you can point out to him "would you prefer the look of the Corsair case more (than the CoolerMaster 690II or whatever other case around that price range)over having a GTX580 instead of GTX570 for better frame rate in games?".

the 560ti can be overclocked further to beat 570 and the 2gb VRAM will be useful in games such as bf3. can go for the 570/580 if you wish. new graphics cards are just around the corner if your friend can wait abit.
