You see threads from time to time announcing that PC gaming is dying because of consoles, because of piracy etc so it was very interesting to read this article;

A report commissioned by the PC Gaming Alliance has claimed that the annual shipment volume for PC hardware in 2009 was over double that for all home consoles combined.

The Horizons Hardware report, available only to PCGA members, expects this trend to continue. Having calculated the revenues from machines shipped with a discrete (ie non-integrated) GPU to be $54.6 billion (£3.44bn) in 2009, the organisation estimated this figure to grow to $61.3 billion (£3.86bn) by 2014.

"One of the biggest trends I'm seeing in the 2009 Horizon's hardware report indicates a strong demand for more capable mobile based systems by PC gamers," said PCGA research committee chairman Matt Ployhar.

"PC Gamers are playing a central role in fuelling healthier margins, and driving innovation in this space worldwide".

The revenue figures are based on the 61.5 million PCs which shipped last year which could be identified as having been purchased with gaming in mind.

The report estimates that there are currently 212.6 million PC users with a discrete graphics solution as part of their machine, a figure which the PCGA expects to climb to 322 million by 2014.

The PCGA is a non-profit organisation which aims to increase the market share and awareness of PC-based gaming.

Hope this isn't a repost.

Interesting reading.

Interesting stuff, although its in their interest to put a positive spin on PC Vs Console gaming.

I'm happy with my choice of gaming machine :)

Assuming that 'machine shipped with a discrete GPU' = 'machine bought for gaming' is a huge jump.

Basically, that article says this "Guy hired to promote PC based gaming says PC based gaming is doing ok!"

The relentless marketing depts behind the consoles will happily spread half truths and outright lies against all opposing platforms, PC included... now at least there is someone in PCs corner to give some kind of balance to the nonsense.

Anyone believing anything like this coming from just about any source is naive; but since naive people are large in number it's important to feed their ignorance from the opposite end.

i think pc gaming has died a fair bit really....most of the top titles we play now really aren't made for pc's, they are console games ported over.
yes we play them on our pc's but unless they are made for the pc in mind it isn't quite the same.

I wonder how they came up with "could be identified as having been purchased with gaming in mind" I'm pretty sure they don't mean PC's such as the ones you would find around here. How many new PCs sold can not play games? I don't mean crysis of GTA4, I just mean play some games.

it's not much better than someone saying "300 million TVs were sold last year that would be suitable for gaming, therfore console gaming must be on the increase"

My place of work replaced all of its PCs last year and they would be capable of playing games so that's a couple of hundred towards their figure.

.... Well of course it was. PCs have a huge part in the work place not to mention home PCs that are used for the internet.

Well this is the the problem isnt it.....playing sloppy seconds console ports isnt my idea of a thriving Pc gaming scene.

All we get now is DX9 console ports with badly coded DX10/11 bolt ons......

Except I didn't see them make any specific comments barring this:

The main gist of the report is that volumes are up, which isn't exactly an outlandish claim...

Every now and then something stunning stills comes along on PC to make you go wow! but this is much rarer than it used to be, PC gaming is definetly declining and as always its due to piracy, consoles and prices to name a few. I still love PC gaming and i'll continue to do so but I also like to play on consoles.

"$61.3 billion (£3.86bn)"

hn? Has the value of the pound jumped radically against the dollar overnight or something?

Lol....OCUK needs to reduce its prices...

Nvidia 460 @ that exchange rate would be hmmm, about....£20...

I'll take 3 pls....:D, 2 for SLI and 1 for PhysX.....:D

its the shizzzle console games that is ruining the pc gaming not the actual platform.

pc gaming was once very inventive and miles apart with consoles playing the leader now we get there cast offs. no one wants to risk financially a new decent inventive idea. thats the cut and short off it.

gaming will in the future be like a box with a capabilities of a pc and gaming console under your tele youll play games through something like steam and be able to watch your cable or sky through same box.how long till this happens i dont know . i think in next ten years is definite.

how much of this growth is in korea or china?

when all these ppl play is WoW or SC2 then no matter how impressive the numbers are - because they are all clustered around one or two core games and regions then really it doesnt bode well.
