PC gaming expense ?

A blanket statement that owning a tv means you don't need 1 for the Xbox is bs. How many parents do you know will allow you to play the Xbox or PS3 on the big tv downstairs when they want to watch it? Thats right, none.

Having a big tv in your room is why you can include it. Not to mention theres no reason to watch tv when you can simply download it on the iPlayer, hell my parents have even got the Wii with the iPlayer on it so they can watch programs through that! (i didn't even know it was possible till last week)

IMO gaming on the PC is for enthusiasts who want the higher settings etc.

Enthusiasts pay a premiuim for the higher spec gear required for max performance - so yeah its more expensive but whether its "worth it" is up to the individual

The bottom line is that it's impossible to fairly compare the two systems unless you make some rather massive assumptions that will likely not really apply to many people in the real world.

You can either look at it from the 'totally from scratch' view where the console needs a TV and the whole PC needs buying, or you can go with a 'modified to game' view where you just account for the parts essential for gaming, such as the extra £200 on a graphics card when buying a new PC.

In real life it is entirely down to personal circumstance. Some people will already have a massive 42" plasma to stick the console in, others won't. Some people will be buying a new PC anyway that could be altered to gaming spec, others won't. Personally the PC I bought was designed for power in other areas and then I added a £120 GTX260 to that which facilitated gaming, far cheaper than it would have been for me to buy the PC and get a console too. If I wasn't buying the PC anyway, then it would have been different and the console may have looked the more appealing answer.

On top of all that there is the quality issue to consider - if you're happy with console graphics you can very cheaply spec a PC capable of displaying 1280x720 and running games at low to medium details, sure you won't get all the high res eye candy but you can match the console performance very cheaply now.

Lol, When I lived at home I had to play my Ps1 and later PS2 in my room on a 14 inch tube telly with an arial input! :P
Ahh, those days.
When I moved out and got my own 36"HDTV I went crazy on consols for a few weeks XD

Thing is - if you've (or your family) has the dosh to spend on a 360/PS3 for a bedroom then they're not gonna struggle to get a TV to go with it. The rest of us can always go budget on cheap tvs that are almost neglegable!

I'm still playing new games on high settings with my Q6600 based rig thats been doing me proud for 2 years now, only upgrade ive done is a 4870 graphics card from a 8800gt.

pc gaming might seem expensive to begin with, but if you buy decent stuff, then it lasts.

I was in a very similar situation. So many hours spent playing Final Fantasy and the like on my crappy CRT tv, probably about 14" too till i got a minor upgrade (my parents old tv from there room ) to a slightly bigger CRT :p
Though tbh, since i got my 32" i've still not really bothered hooking my PS2 upto it. At some point i might steal my brothers PS3 and get FFXIII but... can't be arsed.

:D I'd be willing to bet a lot of people don't know. I think it just connects to your router via wireless and can run BBC iPlayer, pretty awesome really.

I hooked my PS2 upto my 37 " HDTV just so that I could play Shadow of the Collosus and it looked terrible. Very blocky.

Its a shame because I love that game.

Hey I'm from Doncaster lol
