PC hangs on Shut down

I have just reinstalled a PC, put sp3 on it and now when I ask it to shut down it hangs on Windows is shutting down.

The PC reboots fine but it will not shut down completely.

There is no software installed apart from Windows and it appears to only started since I installed SP3.

Any ideas?

PS I have tried different RAM, unplugged the CD-ROM and floppy drive.

if your ok tweaking the registry try changing the time windows takes to kill services http://blogulate.com/content/shutdown-windows-xp-faster-autoend-service-programs-quick-off/ it speeds up my shutdown as i normally have quite a bit running.

how many processes do you have running on task manager? have you looked at your event log? There maybe a driver or program causing errors on shutdown which could be slowing it down.

i normally go through this on reformats to disable unwanted background services which speeds up bootup and shutdown, if you havent done so.

Or just uninstall SP3.?

To me that doesn't sort the problem but avoid it. If I want all the critical updates I can't really not have it installed.

How long have you left it? are you sure it's doing nothing while you're waiting for it to close down (zero HD activity)?
