Hi Guys currently having a big problem with my PC

Using the MSI Z77A-GD80 w/Thunderbolt Intel Z77 with I5 CPU

bought it new from here June 2012

here goes
2 nights ago it just shut down completly rather like the power had gone off
but it was not the mains power at fault

rather baffled as to what has happened took the side case off and tried to boot it up the case fan and CPU spin for about half a second then it just shuts down again

a couple of lights on the motherboard come on for those split seconds

at first I thought it might be the power supply so I disconnected everything bar the boot drive and it is still the same

money is extremly tight as I have been made redundant and cant afford to buy a new Power supply only to find out it is something else and the same with buying a new motherboard

how long is the warranty on top line MSI Motherboards 12 months no doubt

but as things stand not sure where to look first just dont want to spend a ton of money on bits that might not be needed

wonder if an email to MSI might help
thanks and would really appreciate any info at all that might find out what has happened
windows 7
8gb ram
400wtt PSU which has worked flawless for 2 years since I bought it here from new
and the lights and every thing at least try to come on when I press the start button but within second it just shuts down no post to bios or anything

have you got a friend you could borrow a psu from, just to test.

I will see if i can get one from somewhere.. the reason I think it is not the PSUis because it lights thing up and trys to fire the pc up

in the past when the PSU has failed it has either gone bang or 100% dead
Ihave neverhad one where things are still lighting up etc

a new Power supply is the best scenario as it is obviously the cheapest
could the CPU itself go belly up
never had that happen to me before but must add this pc has never been over clocked

Normally the CPU failing, the pc would start up and run all fans but wont POST. Try a PSU, as ive had loads of PSU's fail and still light a mobo LED up, as remember a LED only require a trace amount of voltage to light.

Failing that the Mobo could have gone as that will cause the same issues as what you are experiencing. After you try the PSU, if it don't work then try pulling the BIOS battery to reset the board, but that the 2 options I would say PSU or Mobo.

Update... went out and bought a new PSU £60 put it in this morning double checked all the cables were all present and correct hooked it back up pressed the start and hey presto it fired up

INSIDE THE PC

the screen said no signal repeatedly afdterabout 4 resets and nothing on svreen the PC then shut it self down and is now exactly how it was before

press thye start button the system fans and the cpu fan sort of try to spin for a about half a second then it downs tools and shuts off completely

completely gutted with all this at the moment could not of come at a worse time with a ton of work on my PC that needs doing

so my MSI Motherboard which is the top of the range one and only 15 months old must be goosed I cannot seem to find out what the warranty is with this board on the main page it says 5 yr warranty but on the reciept I got from Overclockers it does not mention the warranty

all i know is i need help sorting this mess fast really urgent I have a good pc to get my work backlog sorted
do you guys reckon it is the MObo
