First time i've asked on here for any PC help. Basically I am looking to improve my PC as a lot of things have gone wrong with it and I just have not bothered to get the replacements.

Here goes...

I currently have a CD drive and DVD drive however these just do not open well one of them does but it takes a very long time (like it has been jammed) any reason as to whats caused this and should I replace both?

I was also thinking i must have done something to my hard drive as the cPU reached 99.5c the other day and windows would not load up and then my hard drive stopped working, so I am having to use my other hard drive.

Should I replace both disc drives or can these be fixed? Also I will need a new hard drive but I think it would be SATA.

Would a better cooling system work on my CPU? Its an intel pentium 3.2 ghz

I am a complete berk at PC's as I found out the other day :(

Hows about ya rig specs, list everything including operating system..
Dvd drive will be replaced, but not yet, try to button down whats causing the issue.
You notice any yellow triangles in Device Manager?

Oh and dont worry bout being a pc berk, we all started at that stage!!

If you have any problems with the optical drive just replace it. They are so cheap and probably not worth trying to repair.

This is a great fast drive for only £16!

Also, the cpu is way too hot at 99c. A hard drive failure would be a separate issue though. If you need a new one I recommend the Samsung Spinpoints. They're cheap and quiet and I've had no problems with the couple I've owned.

For example:
Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ) (£54)

The cooling issue could be a number of things - lack of airflow in the case, broken cpu fan, broken psu fan etc. I'd open the case up, vaccuum it out and make sure all the fans are working. Replacing the cpu cooler would be a good idea too.

Thanks for the help. My problem would be I am not sure exactly what motherboard it is and what type of socket the CPU is so I wouldn't know which CPU cooler would be appropriate? Which CPU cooler would you advise?

I think the DVD and CD drive will be a doddle to sort out so at the moment these are the least of my concerns. However I will look into the Samsung Spinpoint.

Id recomend a RAM upgrade, vista really needs 2 gig minimum, preferably 3-4, you'll notice a massive boost in performance just here, and its relatively cheap too

So the memory would be fine then with these specs?

4 x DIMM, max. 4GB, DDR2 667/533/400, Non-ECC, un-buffered memory
Dual Channel Architecture

However if I wanted to upgrade the cooler would it have to be a 775 socket cooler?

It should be a socket 775 so take your pick of coolers. Double check the size your case can accommodate though. Some of them are huge.

Thanks for the help. I think for now I will just concentrate on getting a new HDD and the Memory.

I've seen some of the socket 775 coolers and they look like a tower block! :p
