PC in perpetual boot loop

didn't work.

i received a msg stating:

windows cannot repair this computer automatically. please remove any devices such as an mp3 player, camera etc. and restart.

the only things that were connected were the portable cd/dvd-rom drive with the boot disc and the keyboard and mouse.

it didn't work.
went into the mobo BIOS menu, checked under the 'peripherals' tab, found 'SATA mode selection', then selected 'AHCI', saved and restarted.
same thing.

Are you still getting the same error message now you've changed this.

You've just got the one drive, it wasn't in RAID mode before was it?

no, it was working fine with the default setting of IDE since i installed the new mobo about six months ago.
i found that funny, as the HD is clearly SATA, but the only options to switch between were IDE and AHCI.
just the one drive.

If it was set to IDE, then it should stay set as IDE. If it was set to AHCI, it should stay set as AHCI.

If you can't resolve the issue, and you are forced to reinstall the operating system, make sure you set it to AHCI first for best performance.

I'm afraid I have no more ideas - as I said before, it was the same STOP error (7b) as my dad's PC, which was simply because his BIOS had somehow reset and had changed to IDE mode rather than the AHCI mode I had set it to, and by setting it back to AHCI it booted straight into Windows and has been fine since.
