I've just got a new build up and running (4800+, 4GB Geil Ultra, X1800XT etc), and I noticed it's getting rather warm indeed.

The X1800 has an Accelero X2 fitted, and it's idling about 60C and 75C ish under load. The HDD is getting way too warm at over 70C under load (manufacturer's max operating temp 55C), 60C ish when idle. The CPU is OK at 40C or so under load.

I've just relocated the HDD so it has a 120mm fan huffing over it, but it's made little difference.

My case is a cheap, standard size jobbie with a plastic windowed side panel. A 120mm Akasa amber is fitted in the front, one Arctic cooling 80mm exhaust fan at the rear and a 120mm fan in the PSU. The side panel has another 80mm fan fitted (not connected atm, need a fan controller), and provision for another 80mm fan on the rear (I have one sitting around I'll fit when I get the fan controller).

Would it be worth me changing the plastic window in the side panel for mesh? Would this help or hinder cooling? I did consider the prospect of using thermal adhesive to glue a large heatink to the HDD, but that's a bit too knife and fork, even for me...

I understand negative pressure within the case is the way to go, but again, I'm not totally sure.

Any thoughts before my HDD snuffs it?

Changing to mesh is only going to make things louder, sounds like the HDD is on its way out.

What is the cpu temp running at?

* im drunk so may be talkin complete crap!

Which way are the case & cpu fans blowing?

HDD temp sound high partic if got a 120 fan blowing over it.

Can you provide any pic's?

Will take pics later.

I think the HDD temp sensor is reporting the wrong figures. Within about 1 minute of powering on from cold just now, it had apparently risen 22C above the ambient temp to 42C.

The 120 is bringing air into the case, the PSU (120MM) and 80mm fan at the rear are both exhausting air from the case. Still, I have some more fans to fiddle with so I'll try that when my controller arrives.

/edit:

The HDD is reporting 47C, and it's cool to the touch. Much cooler than 50C, I know that much!

draw a picture of the inside of your case, including the hot components and fan locations, then post it here, the picture dosent have to be exact but we need to visualise the problem better to give you better advice.
