So here are my specs:

  • i5 2500k @ 4.4ghz (Arctic Silver Thermal Compound)
  • ATI Radeon HD 7850 2GB
  • Gigabyte Z68a-g3-b3 Motherboard
  • 8gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3
  • 600W Corsair Builder Series 600CX V2 80PLUS Power Supply
  • Samsung SpinPoint T 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache HD

Arctic Cooler Freezer 13 CPU Fan
Hydra case

2 Extra 140mm Fans (which run at a constant speed I believe, because they're plugged into a PWR slot not a fan power slot?)

Temps are fine, CPU reaches 60 max on full load. The problem is, my PC is SO LOUD. I can't even figure out if it's the CPU or not, since even if I go into the BIOS and change the CPU Smart Fan Control to manual (0.75/1c - lowest setting), it still seems to sound just as loud.

What have I done wrong? Reading my CPU cooler reviews, people say it's barely noticeable, so maybe it's not that, maybe it's the 140mm fans? Or maybe its my HD? I don't know!!

I also bought a fan controller but have yet to be able to install it, I can't remember exactly what the problem was, but it was something to do with having so many molex connectors, not enough power connections on my motherboard or something.

Anyone help? I want a quiet PC, not a jet engine.

Please do not try to circumvent the forum filters, and I suggest reading the FAQ for the rules.

Does it sound like the fans blowing (like a hovercraft) or more like the case rattling?

You'd know if it is the PSU or HDD, right?

You can disconnect the CPU fan and listen, you should be able run it passive like this for a few mins safely as the heatsink is pretty large.

It will be because your fans are not controlled.

Stick them in PWN Fan Headers and control in bios or get a fan controller.

Please remove the competitor links, the mods hate it when people break the rules.

Im guessing you are hearing a "roaring" sound. This will be the 140mm fans forcing air through the case vents. I ended up cutting out the hexagonal mesh on my Z9 case to help reduce the noise and improve airflow. Whilst this helped with the 120mm fans, my 140mm fans are in the ceiling of the case and the lid has stupid plastic vents before the mesh so when set to full on my fan controller they still roar.

Try unplugging them (i think you mean they are PWM or 4 pin) and see if that removes this noise you hear. A HDD would make a clicking sound

Welcome to OcUK mate :) In future, find the products on OcUK and link those as mentioning competitors is against forum rules and doesn't go down too well.
If OcUK don't sell it, link the product from the manufacturer's site.

In the meantime, you should edit your post with 'legal' links ;) or remove them.

As for your noise issue, I doubt it's the AF140's as they're only spinning at 1150rpm. If they have anything to do with it, it'll be down to air rushing through case grills.
I'd bet on it being your cpu cooler or the PSU fan if it's not them.

Your fan controller should just plug into a molex connector and the fans should then be connected to the fan controller. You should have enough molex connectors as you only need the one :)

Edit: well, looks like most of that got covered while I was typing and stuff :D
