Hey

My pc was great like 3 years back when i got it but lately its been struggling to survive. Its still a really good pc and if it worked like it did when it was new i'd be happy. I'm probably going to buy a new one but want to understand whats wrong with it. Is there any program that will run like a diagnostic on the whole pc and tell u which part is busted?

Personally I think its the motherboard but let me explain what I have and the symptons:

So My pc is:
amd 3500+ winchester
leadtek geforce 6800 gt 256mb ram
1gb crucial ballistix ram
asus deluxe v8 via motherboard
sound blaster audigy 2 value (wish I never got the value!)
seagate 160gb barracuda

Anyway the problem is the sound blaster card sometimes just stops working but then after restarting my pc a couple of times it comes back to life. The ram also seems to always be corrupt. When I run memtest it doesn't work for 2 long but it also depends on my computers mood... sometimes it does well sometimes its crap from the get go... anyway I've had like 3 ram replacements so thats why i think its the mobo. Also lately the graphix card fan has started to make noises and i think overheats and causes instability sometimes. The harddisk is a SATA and the connection is well lose, the mobo bit has almost come off but i've managed to get it to hold on... somtimes my pc just crashes and i need to push that bit in harded for it to boot windows otherwise i get disk error. Also I noticed when I play this like 6 year old 2d game I like, its really slow now and my pc is struggling to survive. The game worked fine until very recently. Its really starting to get on my nerves now. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

erm buy some new SATA connectors !
maybe worth formating the hard drive too and starting again you may have some software messing your system up ,makes a big difference !

how about you reinstall windows.... hardware doesnt just die like you suggest i run PC's years older than that and the only things that go wrong are windows and the hard drives

That's a pretty good idea... I may format as well.

Any program out there though which I can run a diagnostic with that can semi accurately pinpoint where the problem is? :D

Are you sure the sound card is seated properly. I used to get something similar with my SB Live! As the card was screwed in tightly the back of the card used to work its way loose, ended up re-fitting my mobo to fix this but worth checking.

Ye i'd do both
- reseat the sound card and indeed don't screw it to tight so it might come loose.
- reinstall windows: Install the latest drivers available for your hardware. Make sure you find these beforehand and have them ready. Also install all Windows Updates.

Anyway, that's a good pc if you don't run any new games. No need to upgrade then :)
