Morning,

Was on my pc earlier, in a game menu. My headset suddenly went all crackley and then the game crashed. Everything was super slow so I re-started. Now here comes my issue. As it’s tried to re-start all the RGB is going nuts, the fans are all on 100% screaming, monitor is saying no signal and it won’t post. The motherboard LED is amber. It’s been sat like this for ages now.

7800X3D
7900XTX
ASU’s tuf B650

Where should I start first

I hadn’t overclocked the ram but I’d got that and expo setting enabled in the bios.

After disabling that, the pc posted normally with both sticks of ram added.

It had been stable since November last year so not sure why this has happened out of the blue

Expo is overclocking the memory AMD style.

Couple of things to try , download memtest and test for errors and sometimes updating the bios can have fixes so mite be worth looking into.

Thanks, I’ll try a mem test.

I did wonder about a bios update as I haven’t touched it since I built the thing back in November

RAM sticks can spontaneously die, or either the memory/CPU degrade and stop hitting the rated speeds anymore. Not common, but it happens.
Well I hope it’s not my CPU!

I tried it again briefly on my lunch break with a quick game and it seemed pretty smooth again with the expo turned off. No loss of frames either.

I’ve ordered a new usb stick as couldn’t find mine anywhere to run a mem test but if it stays stable with the slower ram speed im inclined to just leave it as it is.

Wouldn’t mind buying a ram kit as worst case I suppose.

Since you have a X3D they're less bothered about the speed.
I’ll run memtest tomorrow once the stick arrives.

Is there any way to test for the cpu degrading?

I’ve got about a month left of any 12m warrenty - not checked yet for anything longer.

Might be an excuse for a larger ram kit is suppose

I just did some software updates on it.

It needed a re-start afterwards and it wouldn’t post again. Even with expo turned off. This time the ram didn’t light up at all.

Took the second stick out again and it posted. Suggests to me that the ram is likely on its way out?

Yup, sounds like bad ram.

It was a Kingston fury 32gb 6000 set.

Assuming it fails mem test and I return it to OC is there a different kit you would recommend?

I wouldn’t mind treating it to a Christmas present and upgrading to a 48/64gb kit now they’re more common. I plan on running this pc for a few years yet still.

Verify that the monitor and cables are functional by testing them with another device. Try a different HDMI/DisplayPort cable and confirm that the monitor is set to the correct input.

Thanks, it’s not the monitor though.

The monitor is working perfectly from other inputs - work laptop and fire stick.

I have multiple cables and I tried that.

When it happens it just won’t post. Within 10 seconds of hitting the power button usually the RGB all goes to one colour and the AIO screen shows the temps. When it’s not posting the RGB is going wild in rainbow colours and the AIO sticks on 20 degrees and it sits there like that indefinitely

Not really, I'd just go for something on the QVL and that is a decent price. The X3D isn't fussed about speeds, so don't overpay.

If you buy a 24/48GB kit, check that the BIOS has updates which support these modules, and/or it has declared support for 192GB in the spec.

Thank you, I’ll run a mem test once the rainforest arrives and take it from there.

It’s behaved itself today for work

With both sticks plugged in and EXPO disabled?
Yeah.

However yesterday it had a repeat performance with both sticks and docp disabled. After it had been seemingly stable for a few hours. It took removing the second stick, booting, shutting down and re-instating the second stick to get it to post.

Before I disabled docp and went through that process it wouldn’t post at all despite numerous attempts.

Definitely sounds like dodgy ram to me, with the second stick on the way out.

I was perhaps thinking this:

I paid £130 odd for my 32gb kit last year. So assuming it fails mem test and OC will take it back it would only cost me about £60 to double my ram for a little future proofing.

Feel like I may have fallen out with the Kingston Fury range a bit if it’s failed after 11 months.

Not necessarily conclusive, because memtest is more for failing memory chips, whereas DDR5 ram now has a power management circuit.

Intermittent detection of memory slots/sticks can sometimes be caused by the heatsink mount, but I assume you're not moving your PC around all the time.
It’s never been moved, in fact this is the first time in 11 months I’ve even had the side panel off.

What do you think my next steps should be?

With no errors in memtest?

I'd keep hold of the RAM awhile longer and continue to run it with EXPO disabled.

If this happens again:

I would look into returning the memory, since it is still the most likely culprit.

If you have problems like that ^^ with a new set, then consider your next steps from there, but realistically I'd expect that to be returning the board and/or CPU. Ideally, you want whatever is dodgy to actually fail, since you won't get any joy from a retailer if the problem is very intermittent. The RAM manufacturer may have a policy of just replacing the sticks anyway and they can test them better than I'd expect a retailer to be able to, though if it fails to run at EXPO speeds that's not hard to establish.

Thanks for your help and advice, I’ll do that.

I might turn expo back on and see if the issue presents itself again and then contact OC to see what the procedure would be.

Reared its head again this morning so finally got my a**e into gear and contacted OCUK.

Went to run the benchmark in game got black ops 6, it ran with a pretty low score considering my spec, game crashed, RGB on that second ram stick went out and the PC crashed again, had to re start without the second stick, then add it again and boot back up.
