Hello,

I built a new PC a few months ago, but for the last month or so i have been having intermittent faults.. Though to be honest i was away just after the build so not really bedded in for a while.

I will provide a description of the fault, and then give then machine specs..

The power on button on my case has stopped working, pressing the on button on the motherboard does not work either. If a flick the on off switch on the back of the machine a few times the machine will power correctly. Once the machine is on it is stable and does not crash. However then sometimes it will power with only one of the two graphics cards working. i cannot seem to find the issue, and i don't want to go buying parts to exchange out without an idea of what the issue is..

Things i have tried:
  • Checks case connectors to motherboard
  • Turned off each graphic cards to test them they work independently.
  • check power connectors and swap them around to other free slots on back of power supply

So any thoughts?

The spec of machine is as follows:
  • Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI HERO Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
  • Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor & Corsair H100i CPU Cooler Bundle
  • Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX24C11T3K2/16X)
  • MSI HD 7970 OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card*
  • Sapphire HD 7970 OC BOOST 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • Seasonic X-Series 1050w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
  • Corsair Obsidian 800D Full Tower Case - Black

Physically remove one or both of the cards as a start l guess.

And then see if it boots using the CPU GPU from the motherboard DVI/DP/HDMI port etc.

The PSU has more than enough grunt to run two.

Also l am sure there is a test to check psu, someone will be along shortly with that tit bit.

Have you looked at MemOK!

To see if it is a memory issue, this will stop system booting, however does not cover the power on button problem with case and mobo.

MemOK is fine... i have disconnected the power to the graphics cards in turn but NOT removed them as they are part of a water loop and i don't have any spare Mayhems to fill the system back up.. though i could just use water i suppose :)

Its really p***ing me off atm.. could be so many things, but i'msure with the help of the forums and lots of testing i will hopefully find the issue...

Had a similar issue with my PSU. It's an XFX 1250w which is a rebranded Seasonic.

Had to RMA mine. I used my backup Coolermaster PSU and everything is working fine.

My feeling is the PSU as well though don't have a backup to test with :(

What are my options for RMA'ing? as i'm not 100% sure it is the PSU. I bought from Overclockers but 6 months ago...

The customer service section of this forum should help you out. My rma was somewhere else so not sure what OCUK do with PSU's.

Ah did not realise it was a closed loop water setup.

As suggested speak to CS, OcUK has the best imo.

Well i have left a message in CS forum, and see what happens... May order a new PSU anyway cant go weeks without PC, and will just sell the old PSU after RMA maybe...

Looking at the Superflower PSU's as a replacement atm the 1300w Gold one.

Have you tried touching the header on the motherboard where the power button connects to, with a flat blade screwdriver ? Just to rule out a faulty switch/wire.

Also 1300W is massive overkill for 7970cf. You can run most dual card setups on an 850W.

If you do end up needing a new psu then look at the EVGA Supernova G2 as you get 10 years warranty with it.

Yes i double checked the case to Mboard connections, making sure all were seated correctly and not worked loose, also the start button the the MBoard itself will not work.

as for PSU, yup expect 1300W is over kill but hey why the hell not :)

I mean if you unplug the 'power' cable from the motherboard header, and then use a screwdriver across the pins. This should then switch the pc on. It is just a way of checking that the wire from the power button isn't faulty, and the power switch itself. I am not familiar with the Asus board, so the switch you mention might do the same job. Still worth a try though.

EVGA do the 1300W Supernova :) £14 extra for an extra 5 years warranty.
