I have a problem with my PC :o After coming home from work yesterday, when I boot up it tells me to insert boot media.

After more inspection its not detecting the hard drive OR the hard drive has gone boom. Not certain on this but it seems like it might be.

Hard-Drive is a Seagate Barracuda, are they known to go pop?
If it has gone then I've just lost an ungodly amount of media and work files. I'm hoping its just a dodgy SATA wire or something, though I dont have a second to try it.

Any thoughts guys :p?

Normally with a faulty hard drive it is still detectable in the BIOS just not easily readable, unless of course the intergrated electronics have gone but i've never seen this.

Could try checking your connections or even moving it to another SATA port. Got another machine or a USB caddy you could try it in?

I tried a different SATA socket and still no go. No second PC either sadly. It will attempt to boot from Vista CD though but as it cant find a HDD it will just crash.

Already said I dont have a second SATA :(, also no power surges that I know of. I shut it down yesterday and it wanted to windows update so I let it, thats the last I saw of it working.. though Vista update shouldnt affect my PC components :\

1. remove hard drive.
2. boot from 2nd hard drive or knoppix CD

If the hard drive has gone, then it won't let the PC boot. I have that happen when it was a hard drive dying that wasn't the system drive, and it wouldn't let the PC boot because it was dying.

also check bois to make sure it is set to auto detect your disk and not somehow set itself to no disk or something.

I cant actually hear if it spins or not because of all the fans in the Antec 900

Taught me a lesson though - get an external HDD and save everything twice.
