Hey all

Another problem :(

It seems if I'm not doing much on my PC, it just freezes... i.e not running programs etc... because if I play games it lasts for ages.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Hmm... To me, that sounds like either a bad video card driver, a faulty video card or just simply a virus freezing your desktop.
I'd say download and install the latest ATI or nVidia driver for your card first, update and run a GOOD anti virus program 2nd and if it still persists, I should think it's a faulty graphics card.

Oh, I'd do a windows update as well if I were you.

Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

Some very nice tips :)

Just had problems with my drivers, so was going to reinstall them all anyway :)

I think I'll do a virus scan at some point too! Cheers.

Do you mean when you leave it idle it freezes? Say around the time the screensaver would kick in or the computer would go into hibernate mode. Or when you're actually doing low intensity stuff like using the internet?

A corrupted BIOS could do that but then just about any software hardware fault will.

Need to eliminate the obvious first as stated above.

Sounded hopeful that you knew something :(

Any ideas?

I had a few ideas if it was the other way around :p

Is there any specific time the computer crashes? Say after x amount of minutes, or when you use a specific program etc? Any other in depth details you can give us about when exactly it happens?

Well if I'm playing Warhammer Online, it never crashes... so what I'm doing is having to load Warhammer and then tab out to actually manage to do things (but I'm on my Mac doing this atm). Saying that... it just froze when I was doing it...

Okay... I was typing this while I had my PC on, and it has taken about 7 minutes to freeze... I was just using TuneUp to see if it found any problems, but it went :(

Doesn't seem to be any specific programs crashing it, but WAR is making it NOT crash, but anything else (not tried any other games) make it crash.

Any more ideas?

Unfortunatly the best way to go is a full re-install of OS and drivers. This will take out any software or config errors that could be causing it. If it keeps happening then re-seat the memory, and test. Then try removing some of the memory and test etc.

Can I just check, is this a new PC?

Or has it JUST started to happen out of the blue on your existing machine?

If it has only just started, what was the last software or hardware change you made?

Had this machine for about 2 years, but updated GFX Card, Sound Card etc.

The sound card was the last thing that I installed on it, but that was quite a few months ago that I did that. Software wise... not much at all?

Will check Memtest after Download Festival I think ;)
