PC just went bang!

Good evening.

I was just minding my own business when my PC decided to go bang. Everything just shut off - I thought I had a power cut or something. I tried to turn it back on and it tripped the main RCD on the fuseboard. I could smell burning, like something has definitely blown up, but what?

Would I start with the PSU? I currently have a cx550m PSU. What would be a good replacement for my ATX case?

TIA

That's called the magic smoke, it's how you know something went to heaven

If your RCD is tripping then it's probably your PSU that's dead, I don't imagine any parts after the PSU could cause the switchboard to trip as the PSU should trip and shut off before the switchboard trips (unless it's a real nasty cheap temu PSU that has no safety protection) so makes it more likely the issue is the PSU

Yeah it’s Corsair. I ordered -

Asus TUF Gaming 750W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply

That’ll fit in my case, right? Will I need any additional cables?

Replace all power cables with the new ones do not mix cables from different power supplys
Okay I’ll order some extras. Thank you for the heads-up.

Edit: won’t the PSU come with some? I have some blue aftermarket ones, but they’ll be okay, won’t they? I’ll take it apart and dust it all off the replace the cables that come with the PSU.

Yes the PSU will come with all the cables just take out the old stuff and replace with the new.

Aftermarket cables you need to makes sure there compatable with the new PSU as the pin layout may be different.

Otherwise you will smell smoke .

As has been mentioned, do not use any of your old cables from the Corsair PSU with your new Asus PSU, not even the blue aftermarket ones.

I see you have made a thread about speccing a new build. Is this the new build or your old one?

Once you get the PSU out, leave it away from the rig and then perform the trusty sniff test. The PSU should still stink if it died. Let the rig air out and sniff test that later, too.

You want to ensure your PSU did this:
