PC keeps artifacting on the desktop.

Hi,

I am sitting here right now trying to write thise with my screen all artifacting. :p Now its only just started happening this morning. I haven't installed anything new either :confused: So does anyone have any ideas? Many Thanks.

Does it happen during post screen or XP loading screen? If it does then your gfx card is most likely gone.

If it dont then its either a driver issue or overheating. It could be overheating anyway so check to see if the fan is still spinning, also see if the heatsink hasnt fallen off at all or if the heatsink pushpins are still in correctly.

Just take the card out and have a general inspection, while your at it take the heatsink off and reseat with thermal paste it may help.
 
u void warranty if u play with heatsink/fan on some cards so check before u play, install ati tool to see if it can give u the temps of the card for overheating, also if different drivers and re-seating the cooler does not work then u need to rma the thing. sorry.
 
If the screen goes like that when the pc has just been switched on, the card is almost certainly dead I'm afraid. Heat shouldn't be a factor at that point.
 
Its either corrupt drivers(Not likely)
Borked card(Quite possible)
Card overheating (Also quite possible)

What card is it? Have you checked the temperature of the card, and looked to see if the fan is still spinning etc?
 
Well I don't have to worry about a warrenty in anyway. :p It's a 9700pro from when they first came out so its a little old now.

Well now you have said it could be overheating. First time it lasted a while before any artifacting, then I rebooted which it didn't take so long to artifact. Also it has been ages since I last cleaned my pc, probably over 2 years now. I will open my pc up in a minute and check the fan is all fine. If I recall correctly the 9700pro used plastic pins to hold the heatsink to the card, I suppose they could have got brittle and the heatsink might be off right now.
 
Just cleaned it all out, was quite dusty really. Also all the pc's fans are working fine, also looking at my temps right now they seem ok. I suppose only time will tell now.
 
Well if it works ok and then starts artifacting after a while then its 100% overheating, So look into that area.
 
It took much longer to artifact this time (from the time of my last post on this thread. It also didn't do it until i tried to play a game. So it seems that it could be heat related?
 
Right well I have tried changing to the latest ATI drivers, no change. I am just trying to let itself cool down first, then I'm going to run a house fan pointed at the card with the case sides off. If it still don't work I will then try underclocking. If all else fails I suppose the old FX5700 will have to go in. :(

Already tried that one but just not with a large kitchen fan. :p
