PC lags in games

My friends pc has started to lag in games. It's all games from the cheap ones off the net to things like WoW. FPS is at 50-60 but every 10-20 seconds it drops to 4-8fps. I've tried everything i can. All the drivers are up to date and all temps are fine. Any help at all would be appreciated because i am now at a loss.

The specs are
ASUS m2n-vm mobo
AMD64 cpu running at 3gig, not sure what type though
2gig ram
nvidia geforce 8600gt gfx

Reduce resolution to the minimum and see if he's still struggling... Is it "lag" or just a drop in framrate?

We've reduced the resolution and the gfx settings and it's still the same. It is a drop in framerate

Pagefile?

ie is it set correctly in the virtual memory settings?

What's running in the background?

Any big software changes between before and after the drop?

prolly anti virus slowing him down.does he have norton?

Yep, i've checked the pagefile. It's all in order. The only thing running in the background is the anti-virus and kasplersky

Could it be something to do with the network connections? Theres both wired and wireless and someone on another forum suggested that it could be xp trying to switch between the 2 and causing games to lag
