PC Locks up during games

Hi guys,

Got an odd problem. Can often game for ages, but my sessions always come to an abrupt halt. Basically, one minute everything is fine, the next suddenly my fps dives down to about 10-15 for 5 seconds or so. Then it goes back to normal, then 5 seconds later, the game slows down to such an extent that the PC has pretty much locked up - if I hit ctrl+alt+delete it will literally take 4-5 minutes for the machine to actually respond, so its quicker to hit reset.

I'm so used to this now I'm able to give advance notice that i'm about to crash to my mates on teamspeak :p

It's pretty reminiscent of that Nvidia slowdown bug on the old 320Mb 8800GTS's if I'm honest, although that never ended up locking the machine up. Bit confused really - the few occasions I've been able to recover the machine from this problem I've checked temps - all of which are absolutely fine.

Noticing it mostly on COD4 becuase thats what I'm currently playing.

Any suggestions?

IP35 Pro, Core2Duo, 8800GT, 4Gb Ram, XP Pro SP2, latest drivers, etc.

Have you tried lowering your overclock and perhaps take 2gig of memory out then try the other 2gig, just in case it could be a hardware problem.

Fox, similar problem to what I've been having which has only started recently. Have you noticed any problems within Windows, perhaps the screen flashing some corruption really quickly? Or the task bar looking corrupt when running a lot of apps (perhaps music player, disk defrag, etc)?

I have an 8800GTS and when gaming (for example in Crysis) it will freeze, then come back to life and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL I'll get the outline of the box and the PC chugs for ages and grind to a halt. ALT+TAB is the same. Then it will kick back in to life.

I've rolled back to the xxx.09 revision drivers and the problem hasn't occured as much, perhaps give that a go. Here's a link for them...

Cheers.

EDIT: Forgot to say. Temps are fine for me. MemTest fine as well. GPU not overclocked.

May be un-related Fox but, I had a very similar issue with COD4 which was cured by a re-install - of COD4 rather than XP - plus the current 1.4 patch.

May sort your problem, be sure to back up any game saves first !!!!
