Hey all,
Turned my PC on yesterday and it started having stability issues where the PC would lock up when it entered windows- nothing new has been installed and has been a joy since I built it in late November '15.
My first step was reinstalling mobo/vid drivers but found even in safe mode it would lock up - NOT GOOD!
I managed to update the mobo bios to the latest release.
Cooling isn't an issue, the CPU barely reaches 35.
I have 4 sticks of Corsair Vengeance LPX (8GB each) and found that removing 2 of them and disabling the XMP profile would allow me to boot and not freeze. Bad ram?
Without the XMP they should run (and used to) @ 2133, yet they seem to change to 1600 now.
On top of this, CPUZ says that they are only running in single channel mode where I am 100% sure they are in the correct pairing dimm slots. (I have the manual in front of me
)
I have since tested each stick individually (in the same slot) and it boots fine and passes a stress test/memtest. Bad Dimm slots?
I then left memtest86 overnight on 2 sticks which I knew at least let me boot up but today have found the PC frozen at 8 hours approaching test #6 with no errors. I say frozen, the test was no longer running but the _ which flashes on the screen, was still flashing. However my keyboard/Mouse (both USB) were no longer working - as well as (I assume) my USB stick of memtest.
This now makes me believe it could be a faulty MOBO for my USB devices to just disappear like that but find it hard to believe given the make/model of the mobo. RAM I am used to seeing fail, not MOBOs.
So what is my next move? I have 4 sticks of RAM to test, 8 slots to do it in (although the "black" slots will not register any RAM in them at all, only the recommended beige ones).
I have not yet messed with the RAM voltage as it is something I have never done before - what would you recommend the safe max to be?
The MOBO has a 5 year warranty and the RAM lifetime - I just don't know which to RMA, if any.
The RAM checks out for compatibility with the MOBO.
PC specs
5930k @ stock and 4.2 tested (overclock off and on)
x99 Asus Sabretooth
32 GB (4 sticks) Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200
1200w Coolermaster Gold
Win 64
Thanks for any advice, anything else to try/think of would be most welcomed!
One very tired and frustrated OcUk'er
