PC Locks up

PC randomly locks up, playing the last sounds on loop. This can happen randomly at any time, sometimes stable for days, other times crashes 5 times in a row. Often while playing video although can happen when idle or browsing the net.
I have not added any software or drivers lately that could cause this but I did format about 3-4 months ago.

Windows 7
Intel i7 975 3.33Ghz,
300GB RAID 0 2x SolidState Drives,
nVidia 295 Graphics card,
Corsair Dominator 6GB 2000MHz DDR3 RAM

Also using CPUID the core speed is only 1716Mhz and Multiplier is only x12 even though in the BIOS I have it set to x26 giving me a 3.8Ghz overclock. Totally confused... could these be related? PC takes a lot longer than it did to boot up before the last time I formatted too.

If you remove your OC profile and set it back to stock speeds does it happen?

Yes, set the multiplier back to x24 default and still see the CPU speed drop to about 1.6 and randomly locks up.

Watching CPUID the speed fluctuates between 1.7Ghz and 3.7Ghz, the multiplier changes from x12 to x26 too. Core voltage was 3.2 and set to auto in the bios, no idea why... changed it back to 1.2v now. ....going to run OCCT now.

I wouldn't worry about the CPU speed at this time. The i7's have turbo boost which will do this.
If you load up say OcUKs homepage have a look at the CPU then (got to love the new Java advert they put in :p).
My i7 950 goes up from 1603.7MHz to 3207.04MHz on stock.

The lock ups sound unrelated to that.

How long from boot till you get the lock ups? Id recommend removing all but 1 stick of RAM. Or running memtest on them.

Hmmm yeah it's flipping between the two values a lot... OCCT just quacked at me and said error detected on core #7. Error on core #3 on the second test. Is my CPU borked?

cores #0-3 are the CPU cores (for Quad). Not to sure on #7

Do you have CPUz? can you post your "memory" and "SPD" Tab for a quick look?

Removed the XMS profile and reset to default CPU settings, notice the totally weird results. Should be x24 and 3.33Ghz.

Running OCCT test then will put the XMS profile back on and post the results from that. I was thinking it could be the GPU, I guess I would rather it was the RAM with the problem though since those lovely people at corsair give a lifetime warrenty on it. What decent memory test software can I use?

memtest is probably the best.
You can boot it from a USB drive or burn it to CD.

Id have a look at your RAM settings in the BIOS. make sure their getting 1.65V and that the command rate is set to 2T. Try OCCT again.

If you want it @ that speed then it won't complain at you. Turbo Boost is only a recent thing.
RAM Settings look better.

Let me know how memtest gets on.
