My dad's been having trouble with his PC for a while now and we've still not diagnosed the problem. It keeps locking up randomly, so far we've replaced the graphics card and power supply and formatted twice. They all made a difference at first but it's been quickly regressing back into its old ways. I'm running (bootable cd) memtest at the moment to check the RAM and even it freezes! (I didn't think it could) It never shows up any errors or dialogue, the timer and progress bars just stop. Can anyone give me any pointers please? I'm really stuck :(

Thanks for the fast reply, I'll try using one stick at a time. Unfortunately the RAM in his pc is very old and mine is very new, not going to happen.

I tried this again and the old memory came up with several errors over the course of a few hours. I managed to get hold of some replacement RAM of the same spec to try and it's locked up again. Around 1h30mins in, the same as before. Any clues what could be wrong with the system?
