With a 4870 (and a very powerful CPU) @ 1680x1050 resolution:
In MW2 it hits 86 FPS withh AA and AF off, with 4xAA it hits 73 FPS [1]
In Oblivion it hits 72 FPS outdoors (1600x1200). [2]
In a top-end modern game the 4870 provides 44 FPS in Battlefield Bad Company 2 with 2xAA/4xAF. With a few settings turned down you should get close to 60FPS.
The processor is a triple core Athlon II clocked at 3GHz, in modern games the 4870 (or 4890) graphics card will limit performance well before the CPU causes slowdown.
One thing I would suggest doing before buying anything is open up your case (with a tape measure in hand) and check how much space there is in your case for a new graphics card.
The 4870 is a rather big card compared to your GT 220, it is 9.5 inches long and uses a dual slot cooler.
