PC not booting when in case boots fine when tested outside case

Good morning folks ,


my pc is giving me greif ,

i thought the power button was at fault as it wouldent boot , so i stripped the pc down and removed it from its case,

I manually started the power switch with a penny , it booted fine, i then put the pc back in its case , I re connected all the cables and it fails too boot it will maybe boot 1 out of ten times says something about cold boot too many resets and then doesnt load windows it will boot first time every time when i tested this outwith the cpu casing any ideas what could be holding me back here

its rather annoying :(
 
Sounds like it could be a short caused by the mobo onto the case - this would do this, Has it just started doing this or has it been going on a while?
 
Ok, the OP is a little confusing. When you say failing to boot, do you mean nothing happens? i.e. do the fans not spin?

And when you say "power switch with a penny", I guess you mean making a connecting with the pins on the mobo?

If it's a case that everything is working with a jump start but not whenthe Power Switch connected, then my guess is that there is a break in the Power Switch cable. You can test this using a multi-meter to check the resistance.

hmm well tbh the pc done it randomly a few weeks ago and i took it apart for testing and its been sitting on top of an vinyl record case for the last 2 weeks kinda finally got round too putting it back in case , what exactly shud i be looking for too get this "short " sorted out

yeah i was just bridging the power switch with a penny


well the switch has been tested and definetly works (didnt test it with a multimeter but it is powering on the machine).


the machine powers up the fans spin up but it will usually not display the graphics even though the pc is on and powered up

maybe one out of ten times it will display the bios post settings every other time im getting a blank screen


when it does boot with the video working i get the message error saying too many cold resets, i then set up bios too make sure everything in order but when it reboots it goes too black screen

and doesnt load windows even though the correct boot device is detected and selected and the correct pci slot is chosen for the gfx card


the graphics driver loads first time every time when mobo is out case so i know the graphics card is working correctly :S

Have you tried disconnecting the reset switch?
 
took all the screws out and back in again and its working again now ,there was definetly nothing touching the mobo and the gfx was fully loaded in the pci bay, i had this problem 2 years ago when i built the pc , ah well fixed for the time being


pc due an upgrade dual core amd 2.5 with 3gb of ram cud be doing with a core i7 , been scanning mp3 files for days for reports on the bpm etc
