PC Not Powering Up with 2TB Drive

I have a PC that I've had running for around 4-5 months now with no issues. It's a Core i5 3570K system with a Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Motherboard.

I've just taken the side off to install a 2TB drive that's got some data on it that I need to access and the computer won't even power on. Remove the drive, unplug power cable and replug it and the computer boots fine. Try with a 1TB drive and it works no problem.

I know the 2TB drive works as I was using it in another system but any suggestions as to why the PC wont boot with the drive attached? Could it be the motherboard? (I have updated the BIOS to latest version.

I've just tried with a second 2TB drive and that stopped the computer from powering on as well (both drives are Samsung F4's).

I also get this on my XPS 17 laptop.

I posted previously but never got to the bottom of it. I just unplug it when I want to boot my system. It's an annoyance but not the end of the world.

A fix would be great though.

better question would be what o/s are you using etc? ie xp - vista - win 7/8 32bit or 64 etc etc fat fat32 HPFS / NTFS?

as most modern m/b should see it, even without a bios update, where as older ones might not even with a bios update, but o/s wise, the later the better

Does the system POST? Could be that the 2TB drive is selected as the main boot drive & then when it tries to boot, just restarts as there is no OS? Or does it not reach POST?

Thanks for the responses.

The OS is irrelevant because the PC doesn't even power on with the 2TB drives attached. If I try to power on the PC with a 2TB drive attached, I have to pull out the power cable and plug it back in to get it to boot. Any other hard drive works fine.

With my one (sorry to hijack the thread) it boots fine when I have my old USB 2 (500gb) drive plugged in but when I plug my USB 3 (2tb) drive in the laptop doesn't post. It turns on but that's it. Nothing on the display, no beeps or anything.

I don't think the OS is relevant but this is with both Win 7 and Win 8.

I think I've made some progress with this.

I have tried the 2 x 2TB Drives in 3 different PC's and a HP ML110 G6 Server and none of the systems powered up with these drives attached. Therefore it must be the drives at fault.

I've done a lot of googling and it sounds like the drives are shorting and that is causing the PSU's protection to kick in and cut off power. It's only when I unplug the power cable from the PC, wait a few seconds, then reconnect it, that the PC will then boot again.

So... a couple of questions:

1. If it's the PSU's protection devices kicking in, do I have more chance of the drives working in a USB enclosure just enough to recover the data?

2. Is this sort of fault likely to be covered by the warranty? I've seen details of a possible fix (i.e. removing two TVS diodes and bridging the zero-ohm resistor) but I don't want to void the warranty for the sake of recovering data. I've checked both drives and both are under warranty until 2014 but just not sure whether this sort of fault would be covered.

Is there anything I can do to recover the data that won't affect the warranty?

Thanks for the link however the PC won't even power up so its not a windows issue.

What PSU do you have? 99.9% of stuff is is PSU.

Also, i had a home server that used to do the same (ish, it was 1tb back then) thing...

I can't see it being the power supply when I've tried 3 pc's and a hp server.

The last time I used the drives was in a PC with an Antec 620w power supply. I change the motherboard and CPU in the PC and now the drives don't work in any computer.

Do I have more chance of them working in a USB enclosure?
