Just up bought a whole load of stuff for my pc including 4gb of GeIL (4x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 ram with a Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard.

The problem is if i run just 2 sticks everything works fine however with 3 or 4 running i get the mobo screen up and it freezes there, i cant even get into the bios or anything!?

is there likely to be something up with the ram or have i just wasted £30 on getting 4gb instead of 2gb?

thanks

Up the Memory Voltage or/and North Bridge voltage.

i've just tried increasing the voltage upto +7v (tried each setting) and on +6v it gets the windows loading screen and reboots, at +7v it doesnt even post! also the ram was extremely hot for being in the pc for all of 5 mins!

i'm quite new to o/c etc so whats the North Bridge voltage?

thanks

Looking at the spec of the ram on OcUK it states it can run between 1.9v to 2.3v. (Do NOT run it higher than this) Try setting the voltage to 2.1V

It's the MCH voltage (Northbridge) try upping it by 0.1 it should help with stability when using 4 sticks of ram.

If it's double sided RAM, the P31 chipset can't run 4 sticks of double-sided, you need single-sided RAM. Corsair Value PC5300 is usually single-sided as is some Corsair XMS2 PC6400. I'm pretty sure that all Crucial Ballistix is single-sided, but I would ask before buying. For some reason, anything running Micron RAM seems to be generally all single-sided.

And no, the sidedness is not visible from whether the chips are on one or both sides of the board, it's to do with electrical connections.

so my choices are

- stick with 2gb
- buy new ram
- buy a new mobo and chip....

hmmm
How old is the Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard? if its 7 days or less do a return under the distance sellers act?? I would go for an IP35 motherboard.

i picked it up on saturday!

if i got an IP35 motherboard would i be able to run 4gb?

ok, so i need t figure out a decent motherboard... it'l def work with 4 x 1gb double sided ram??

can i just return the old mobo to o/c'ers hassle free though?

Yep explain the problem & explain that you cannot use double sided ram on the P31 chipset & was unaware & didnt know so need a suitable motherboard like the one I mentioned above so that it will work - dont let OcUK techs feed you will bullcrap - let them see that you know what your on about with the single sided ram scenario - you would be better off with a replacement motherboard to solve the problem.
