Hi all,

I have an e-machine here (i know, i know, its not mine though). Basically it will not boot.

I have changed the PSU as the old one seemed to be fried. Tried the old one in another machine and it was confirmed dead.

Bought a new one, fitted it, no life what-so-ever. The PSU doesnt even spin, no HS fans spin, nothing. The only thing which shows some life is the power switch on the front of the machine. Its permantly on!!

I have so far tried... running barebones, with just 1 stick on RAM, CPU and integrated gfx card but to no avail.

I have alos tried another stick of RAM i had kicking about.

I have made sure the 4-pin is connected too.

Anyone else have any suggestions? :-(

Hi, it sounds like a dead Mobo to me if the system is completely dead though are some simple thing to check first. Though if it was hit by a surge or something, have you checked the fuse in the power lead or replaced the power lead as that could be damaged.

Have you tried swapping the power switech with the reset switch or short the pins out on the header to rule out that it is not a stuck/faulty power switch which could have shorted out the system being constantly in the on state.

How do i go about shorting the pins out on the board? Just a case of bridging it with a screwdriver?

I have a funny feeling its a dead mobo.

Still though, the lady whos machine it is will have to pay me for the new PSU i've installed as that was well dead lol.

Dunno what an emachine is, but a good way to check the supply if it's an ATX jobby is to link the green wire to any black on the connector, paperclip etc, and then give the supply power, if the supplys fine it'll boot up and if it aint, well then it won't.

Least yu can rule that out then.

The PSU is brand new and its been tested in another machine so i know it works.

Its more than likely a dead mobo now i think of it.
