I was using my computer as normal the other night when suddenly it cut out for no reason. The mobo light is on green but when I press the on button it sounds like its shorting out. I have tried two different PSU's and its not that. Taken all HD's out, then graphics card and still the same problem.

Mobo: Asus P5K Deluxe
CPU: E6600
RAM: 4gb OCZ 6400

Do you think its the motherboard that has gone? or CPU?

Sounds like it might be the switch - you could try shorting it... (I'm sure someone can post how lol). Some MBs have a power switch directly on them (mine does) so maybe try that if you have one?

Use a header connector or even a screw driver to short over the two power ON pins. Trace back the wire from the ON switch if you do not know where the system panel out is. Below the pins should be marked on the mobo to indicate which are which, it will also say in the mobo manual.

If its not the switch header loose its most likely the mobo or RAM since you have not changed those. Try to boot with each memory stick individually.

Right, Ive tried:

A screwdriver on the two power on pins (It has done the same, tries to power up but then shorts)
Different kettle cables & different wall sockets (It has done the same, tries to power up but then shorts)
Taken all RAM out and put each one in individually (It has done the same, tries to power up but then shorts)

So looks like it could be the motherboard? But its odd that the green light on the motherboard comes on?

Edit: I checked the CPU and it didnt looked fried....no burn marks....

try disconnect all unneeded component

like fan, hdd, optical drive

could be 1 of the component developed a fault and creating a short circuit

well the chance of a cpu failing is slim

psu is fine then a WILD GUESS would be the mobo...

a good excuse to upgrade?

try disconnect cpu fan too?
