Hi,

Round at a mates to look at his pc, as its stopped posting. It crashed a few times last night, and now will not come on. No bleep but the light on the Mb is on.
I have tried to reset the bios, tried my PSU and video (only things i have that will fit), disconnected vid, sound and hard drives and tried with different memory config. All with the same result.

Guessing its the Mb? maybe the cpu or ram aswell. Any suggestions? No other PC that will fit to test the remaining components

One other thing the rear fan had also stopped working.

When you said ou tried your PSU.. what do you mean by that exactely?

Check that all the connexction a re tight and secure.. 20/24pin atx and 4/8pin CPU power etc..

Then check your PSU using this guide here:

I very much doubt the memory is the route of your problem but check it anyway:

Use memtest86+ to verify the memory is operative. Try using one memory stick at a time and try the single sticks in different slots. If one stick of memory fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is certainly going to be a memory controller problem. This could be CPU or Motherboard depending on the platform.

Check that the memory is set to the correct setting i.e. VDIMM and latency timings. Check the manufacturers website for details.

I mean I used my psu to power his pc, to rule out the PSU as this would be the most likely cause.
I've tried the memory in single stick configs but no post still
Can't run memtest, or check the timings since it will not post ;)

Before you reset the bios, switch off wait for all LEDs to go out, remove the battery and AC power cord, switch on the PC several times in this condition to remove all power from the system, clear cmos 30-60 secs, replace cmos jumper, connect battery and power cord and try again.

Do you have a floppy?

If the above does not work still, you can use a floppy drive to reinstall the boot block.

With the crashing, I suspect a hardware fault also, try as below.

Well it was the MB, no surprise there.

However come across the most annoying thing. The motherboard i got for him does not take double sided ram (with the chips on both side of the pcb), I have never come across this before in the many pc's i've done -.-
