pc not recognising hard drive

I came back from work today and tried to boot up my pc, it hung on the post screens and then gave me the message "insert boot media etc etc". A little confused i restarted, checked my hard drive was plugged in ok and checked it was selected as primary boot device in the bios.

Now, my hard drive (Seagate 500gb ST3500320AS) is not showing up in the bios at all. I can hear it power up and then the hard drive activity led stays fully on but i cant boot into vista or get it to come up in the bios.

After a quick bit of googling i found this page:

http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1529217&page=1

I believe i have the same problem as this guy so took the advice on that page and tried to update the firmware, i confirmed that i have an affected drive using the seagate website's serial number check utility.

Unfortunately i got exactly the same thing as the guy in that thread.

"error: unspecified drive found. expected ST3500320AS"

Im stumped now, i have no idea what to do now and could really use some help. I dont mind having to reinstall on a new drive which i assume i will be able to get from seagate but i need the files off the unresponsive drive.

Just yesterday i cleared my external hard drive ready for a fresh backup of all my stuff so its just my luck that the hard drive has just failed before ive been able to back up.

So my main question is. How can i access what is on the drive. I have no access (at the minute) to another pc with sata. what can i do?

The link you posted does also have the solutions you need although you will need access to another computer. Do you know anyone who has a laptop who could help you?

ive spoken to seagate technical support and they have confirmed i cant flash the drive because it isnt recognised by the bios.

i have a laptop with sata and i tried to boot it with my problematic drive plugged in, however it didnt power up and couldnt be used.
