My mates PC recently went down, no power no lights on the case totally dead. Having gone down to his to inspect I took with me a brand new PSU as this is generally the case I come across when computers have no power running through them. I installed the new PSU and guess what, exactly the same problem. Totally dead. I took out the new PSU and done the old paper clip test on it, and the PSU is working fine.

I took my mate PC back to mine to try sort out just what is going on here. So I completely stripped it down, checked all the front case connections, took the board out of the case with everything on it, just in case it was shorting on the metal anywhere. Tried to power up via the PWR Switch via use of a screwdriver on the 2 terminals. Zilch. Nothing going through it, totally dead. My obvious conclusion is that the MB is dead.

Now what I want to know is, do you think my conclusion here is the MB. Or could it be the CPU. As I do not want to be asking the guy for money for a new MB, only to find out his CPU was the problem.

The MB does not have any Led indicators on it, so it's really a bit of a bummer to see if any power is getting through to it all.

Would love some good advice here folks if you could help please, as I do not want to be costing my mate a fortune.

so he has the same platform as yourself then can u not test things like his cpu in your rig also his memory sounds like the mb tho :)

Well yes I do have the same platform as a matter of fact, but no way am I taking my PC apart to try out such things. I was just wondering if the CPU was an important factor of getting the lights on the case to light up. Or getting power through to the board... Sounds silly after all these years I know, but surely there must be another way of knowing which one is at fault here.

if your really stuck and want the cpu tested send it up this way but i would put me money on the mb being at fault did u check that all the cables were in properly ie 24pin connector 4/8 pin connector etc

Yeah I checked all the cables were all in and that. I even tried removing the Memory to try and get a beep, but got nothing. My suspicion is the board. I also done a paper clip test on the PSU that was in it, and that's working fine as well.

I will try and find him an ASUS Board I think.
