Hi folks
Bit of help with a wifi ip address problem please?

All devices I have tried, with the exception of just this one Windows 11 pc, can connect succesfully on wifi.

My pc with the problem seems to always end up wth an Automatic Private IP Address. It has full strength wifi signal according to windows. ssid password is correct and windows confirms it is connected to the wifi network.

It did connect correctly initally for an hour or so with an automatic dhcp of 192.168.4.x but when I next checked after a couple of days it appeared to have failed and ipconfig tells me it now has an ip address of 169.254.x.x. (Googling tells me this is a fairly useless fallback ip address for something which can not obtain an appropriate ip?

I've tried setting a manual address in network settings but that didn't help. No amount of rebooting has helped.

The other 3 devices, one iphone, one android phone, one windows 7 laptop have all worked succesfully otherwise.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Describe your network layout. Do you have power line or mesh on your network?

Do you have any smart switches with default IPs set ?
What is doing your dhcp etc
Wish I could answer that. I'm not very knowledgable about this stuff. I suspect no powerlines but imagine that the corporate customer access points throughout the building are a called a "mesh"? It relies on thier access points to pick up its wifi. The customers I.T. chap has also had a quick look and assured me they are not blocking this pc and that the issue is this win 11 pc. Ended up pulling an ethernet cable through the building directly from my company server to the win 11 pc. and it works fine. But I'm trying to find out why the wifi is problematic for this particular device and for future reference and curiosity :)

Try an Ethernet cable and updating the drivers and check to make sure you don’t have any daft 3rd party AV programs which are blocking the DHCP with an over zealous firewall.
Ethernet cable works but I'm reluctant to download and install any software to the device. I don't want to risk starting a worldwide meltdown. (Joking, obvs) :)
