pc only boots when cd drive unplugged

Hi
recently i thought my hard drive failed as pc failed to boot (loads up then hangs at flashing underscore) so i tried everything cmos reset bios reset boot device priority nothing worked i unplugged the cd drive and it booted up, anyone shed some light on this

does it boot with cd drive in if your use boot menu and select the hdd?

no it doesnt boot at all
