PC only staying on for 5 seconds

Bought a used motherboard from ebay and it boots fine... with only 1 stick of RAM. If I put the other RAM in I don't get a display. It's not the ram sticks because both sticks work fine in the one ram slot, but put another stick in that RAM slot and it wont get a display

Try this, put 1 stick of ram into slot 1 and 1 stick into slot 2, this should run them in single channel instead of dual channel, see if it posts, if it does, its very possible that your motherboard dying has damaged the CPU, its memory controller by the sounds of things.

It won't let you because it's a board taken from a prebuilt system. You need a bios chip I think but no idea how these work

If it came from a pre built system, what you really need to know is who made the system, Packard bell, Dell etc, and the model number of the system, then look it up on their website and see if theres any bios updates.

RM made the system, seems like they don't release any bios for it though. The exact model is ASUS P8h61-i LX R2.0/rm/si

seems theres bioses available on the ASUS website for it, not sure its a good idead using them though, sometimes manufacturers mod the boards to their liking. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H61I_LX_R20/HelpDesk_BIOS/

Happened to me once with a MSI board I pulled from a pre built system, its was an MSI MS**** and I found bios updates for it on the MSI website, flashed the latest one and it never posted again.

I did try those bioses but it won't flash them

just a stab in the dark, but download the manual and have a read through it, sometimes there is a bios protection jumper on boards, 3 pins where you have to move the jumper from the left 2 to the right 2 pins to enable flashing.
